Considering a prime, thoughts on these...

I've been considering adding a new prime to my kit recently for portrait work. I currently use the following:-

Canon 28-105mm f4.0 - General use, majority of portrait work with flash.
Canon 17-40mm f4.0 - Again as above bit not used that often now.
Canon 50mm f1.8 - Social parties/friend gatherings when I don't want to think about lighting too much (either ettl flash or natural).

Now whilst I really like my 28-105 I feel it doesn't create natural light images that pop so without being able to justify another L lens at the moment I'm considering one of these:-

Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM (~£300)
Canon EF 100mm f2.0 USM (~£370)

Anyone have an opinion on either especially in regards to outdoor/natural light portraits and how they perform compared to their more expensive L rivals?

Thanks
Andy

I only tried the 85 and it is one of the sharpest non L primes, it's fast in terms of aperture and focus speed.

You'll be blown away if this is your first prime. (excluding the nifty)

Yeah, the 85 is a true classic of a portrait lens. The 100mm is great but if you're looking for a 100mm why not look at the 100mm 2.8 Macro? You get the additional fun of doing some really close up stuff and a portrait lens thrown in as well and it's sharp.

If you really want just a fast portrait lens then personally I'd opt for the 85mm.

The 85mm is sounding tempting; just checked SH prices out of interest but seems Kerso will do a new one for around £270 making it very hard to resist.

Another vote for the Canon 85mm f/1.8 - it has a very good reputation and is a complete steal at £300. I'm surprised Canon don't charge more for it to be honest!
