MGS and Drake's Fortune have all but pursuaded me to get a PS3.

Questions:

My monitor has a spare HDMI port and VGA port. Which of those can I use and which is best for quality?

Audio: I'd prefer to use optical if the PS3 has it (this would involve swapping cables round but I don't mind) but my speaker control 'pod' (logitech) has a spare 3.5mm jack and spare coax too. Does the PS3 have optical out?

Um. That's it really.

Ah, wireless. PS3 has that built in yes? Does it also have an ethernet port?

Thanks.

hdmi, yes and yes.

Ah, nice and simple. Thanks.

Don't suppose you get a HDMI with it do you? And if i did get a HDMI is the optical port still usable, i.e. separate?

May be a silly question but I'd like to make sure.

dont get the HDMI lead but you can use the optical out and HDMI at the same time (seperate) as this is a similar setup to what i have

The optical port and the HDMI ports are seperate but you will need to buy the cables as they do not come in the box

.

Only a crappy composite cable comes with the console, and the video and audio ports on the PS3 can be configured independently via the PS3 dash.

It will have to be HDMI, as Sony dont seem to support monitors so using a VGA lead can be expensive at best, so a £5 HDMI lead would do the job fine.
The PS3 has a standard Digital optical out, if you have an Amp the supports in auido (7.1) can also come from the HDMI lead, ever though of a optical switch box dont think there that expensive.
The PS3 has a wifi port and a gigabit ethernet port, the wifi supports wpa 1 and 2 so it should be a hassle getting connected wirelessly even though there is a few isuses with a small number routers.

As as side note you can get a PS3 leads package from a supermarket (not the biggest ones) that consists of 1.8 m hdmi lead and a 1.8 m optical lead for £10

Technically HDMI should be better than VGA, as VGA is all but dead tech. However, it really depends on the monitor you use. For example, my monitor handles VGA better than HDMI, with better colours and better 1:1. Do a quick google check to find out which one is better. If all else fails go for HDMI, as it should be better

I got one yesterday with mgs4,and i am enjoying it,I just been playing around with it yesterday trying to figure out how everything works ect,i didn't realize the pad was rechargeable lol, feels so light compared to the 360 pad.I thought it was just a basic pad you get with the ps3,and also being able to connect to my wifi without needing anything extra is pretty cool.I downloaded a few demo's from the online store last night, the F1 game seems good and everybody's golf.I only got MGS4 and i bought bluray of POTC worlds end.The graphics are nice on mgs4 even tho i was abit annoyed with the 10 mins installing and then find out there is still loading times, what is the installing for?

finally had a play with my ps3 today, bought GRID for it this morning which i quite like, also got GTA4 which i've yet to get into (i will do though). My first thoughts are i'm pleased with my purchase, though i'm definitely going to upgrade to dual shock 3 pads, i haven't tried sixaxis yet, apparently, gta4 supports it but not tried yet.

I stuck my ps3 in my hardware cupboard (where i keep my V+, dvd and AV stuff), it got hot in there and boy is the fan loud on the PS3 :D

My only regret is not channeling a 2nd HDMI cable into the wall when i decorated so now i've got a big dirty black HDMI lead going up the wall to my tv spoiling all the hard work it took to channel the power, VGA (for PC), audio and scart into the wall before wallpapering :(

It sort of defeats the purpose of having multiple HDMI ports on your TV, but you could get a 2 way automatic HDMI switchbox. I've got one of these as my TV only has 1 HDMI port and it works great. Basically the device plugged into port 1 will always take priority :)
