I originally signed up with UKFSN back in October 2007 and they've been fine but I'm considering moving over to BT.

My local exchange goes 21CN on the 20th June and I've been advised by Entanet that ADSL2+ will be available. Does that mean that if I move to BT then ADSL2+ will also be there straight away? Is it right that once an exchange changes that ADSL2+ is automatically available for anyone connected through that exchange.

My reason for considering moving is based on a couple of factors.

1) Cost - I currently pay UKFSN £30.20/month for their "Family 60" package. With BT I currently pay £17.35/month for the Unlimited Anytime Plan, basically inclusive calls anytime of the day. That's a total montly cost of £47.55

If I move over, my costs will be £41.90 to BT.

2) Bandwidth - Tricky one this. My package gives me 60Gb of traffic between 08:00 and midnight on weekdays (what UKFSN call 'peak' time) and unlimited outside this. I've sometimes been very close to the peak usage:

Although upon checking I see that I've not been close to it in the last year. Prior to that I did get within a gig of peak a few times.

I would like to be able to set up an offline copy of my data which I can't do at the moment due to bandwidth restrictions. If I go to BT then I'll be on unlimited data, although that is subject to FUP. However, an internet search does seem to suggest that the BT FUP is actually pretty fair.

At the moment I don't have a huge download rate, it's supposed to be "up to 8Mb" but we all know what that means - I get around 3.5-4.0Mb. How is that likely to change once ADSL2+ rolls out? I guess it won't double and it's difficult to predict what the change will be. I also understand that upload rates increase quite significantly so that'll be better for me if I'm uploading to an offsite backup.

Do BT traffic shape at all? UKFSN claim not to but I've had slowdowns during the day in the past.

How useful really is BTFON? It's not a primary reason to move but it will be handy to have access to other wifi access points around the country.

I currently run a Draytek 120 ADSL modem and an Apple Time Capsule router. I don't care about the BT Home Hub and don't particularly want to use it. I assume my modem will connect perfectly?

Many years ago I used to be with BTInternet but I left when they got grumpy about the amount of time I was connected by ISDN (24/7). Does anyone know what are my chances of getting my old email address back because it was a very good one (not that I'll actually use it, it'll just be nice to have it). My phone number is the same and I live at the same address.

My exchange is at Frinton-on-Sea if it makes any difference to whether I should change or not.

Bottom line - Change or no change?

BT do shape stuff, especially torrents and quite often network capacity issues will crop up at busy periods say 6pm- 10pm. BT Fon is great if you need to go around the country and use wi-fi hotspots a lot, else it's not great. Free Flickr Pro account on option 3 too btw. BT HomeHub is fine if you take the time to configure it, I'm not sure if your Draytek can handle ADSL2+ but I'm fairly certain it can. Doubt if you'd get your old email address back if it's as good as you believe...

All in all only you can decide if it's worth it. You'd save a bit and I've never really had problems with BT but that doesn't mean you won't!!!

I just changed from UKFSN last week,to sky, still in the training period.
My exchange had just got the sky llu equipment installed
I went from a flakey max of 2 meg with loads of tweaking needed to a solid 3 meg with 60db downstream attn atm, fingers crossed

I know there's not many options at the exchange but surely that will change once the 21CN network rolls out there in a months time?

Any ideas on the ADSL+ questions above? Do all ISPs automatically get it once the exchange is upgraded? I'd hate to move from UKFSN to BT only to find they don't have it (that does seem like a strange thought though).

I recently switched to BT and got the Unlimited (300GB) Anytime Monthly Allowance package through their "Special Offers Squad" for £13.50 a month; coming from Sky. They do heavily traffic shape torrents and P2P connectivity but you can easily get around this by using a VPN service (of which I pay a small monthly subscription for). It all works out under £20 a month in total for a good service.

No, your LLU options will be determined by the business priorities of the various LLU operators, it has nothing to do with BT's upgrade to 21CN.

Once an exchange is upgraded to 21CN then all the BT Wholesale ISPs have access to it.

Whether they make the move immediately is another question. My exchange was upgraded about a month ago and I paid a one off fee for an early migration to ADSL2+ because it could be another 2-3 months before the batch migrations happen. At the end of the day you will get moved onto 21CN eventually simply because it costs the ISP less to have you there than on 20CN.

From what I understand, the 300Gb artificial cap has been removed now anyway.

That's a very good price for that package, the proper rate is £28/month so can I blag it at that same rate?

Someone here at work has just told me that torrents are really heavily shaped and he just doesn't bother any more - Please tell me more about this VPN service because I may have to go that way.
