Hi there,

I currently have an opty 170 (CCBBE 0615, many capable of 3 Ghz) running with 1.39v at 270x10 with 2GB memory at 270 3-4-3-8 and I am considering to buy a E4400, P5N-E Sli and 2GB geil PC6400 to replace it aiming to reach about 3200 Mhz overclock.

Is realistic to reach 3200 Mhz with the intel system above? I know is better the 6600 but I don't want to spend £150 just for a bit more speed.

Will I notice much difference comparing with the opty system even increasing its overclock close to its possible 3 Ghz? I do mainly internet and games.

Any inputs are welcome even considering I like more AMD than intel ;)

Any reason for the upgrade ? Is your system struggling to run certain programs smoothly ?

If so, maybe try raising your vcore to 1.475 and over clocking your opty 170 higher (nice stepping btw) and see how it goes.

If you need a boost for games & it doesnt cut the mustard then maybe a core 2 processor will do. But I would have thought your graphics card would have been ok with the AMD for now.

Most of the core 2 4xxx chips can hit 3.0Ghz which will give you a noticible boost but at a big expense if changing cpu, mobo & ram.

I would say keep what you've got & clock your Opty higher. I think it's the same stepping as mine & I've had it up to 3.05GHz but I need better cooling for it to be stable. Plus if you still wanna go C2D, wait til either after the July price drops or Penryn :)

Hi :)

I made the move from Opteron 165 @ 2.8GHz to Core 2 Duo E6300, now sat at 3.0GHz 1.275V. I made the move simply because I was able to sell my 939 components and buy Core 2 Duo and DDR2 for a low two digit outlay overall! My Opteron was never in any way too sluggish. I simply made the move because I could. :D

Well what can I say. For CPU intensive games, my framerates have indeed shot up a little. I reckon "clock for clock", there's very little between AMDK8 and Core 2 Duo, but quite simply the overclocking headroom on these CPU's are unbelievable. They run so cool as well, with my CPU hardly pushing over 50*c (coretemps) after a couple of hours of running ORTHOS at the speed above.

Your Opteron 170 would easily fetch around the £80-100 mark especially since it's a CCBBE. My CCBBE was sold for £72.50 and it was a 165. That's pretty much covering the cost of an E4300 or E4400.
Again your Corsair 2GB kit would fetch around £75-80, and 2GB of GeIL PC2-6400 Ultra is actually less than that at £65 :)
Your motherboard would fetch around £30-50 depending on what it is. This is the ONLY place you'll lose money.

I see you read my mind, that's why i am considering the upgrade cos hardly is going to cost me any money right now after selling the parts (will be different if I wait till the end of summer) and I will get a little bit more of performance :p

Go for it.

Don't bother clocking your Opty from 2.7 to 3. Most likely the only difference you'll notice is considerably more heat. Buy C2D now whilst RAM prices are low and your Opty will still fetch a reasonable amount.

If you wait because there's something new around the corner, you'll be waiting forever.

300mhz does make some difference. I had a 3700+ at 2.75 ghz, then clocked it to 3.00ghz

This basically meant that i could play fear on high cpu settings, from medium cpu settings, at the same frame rate
