Hi all,

bit dissapointed in my current rig playing bf3 i get massive FPS drops at some points sometimes dropping to 30fps on certain maps [looking out over river on seine crossing and inside the tower on sharqi]

ive been thinking about a move to intel for a while now as i cant get any further than 4ghz on my current machine even under water and hearing of 5ghz on the intel cpus makes me want one!. Unfortunatly i know absoutly nothing about intel, no idea what board i need what cpu to buy or anything!

from recording gcard usage on afterburner my g card seems to hit 95%-99% usage so is my cpu holding me back somehow? i honestly thought that going from a 6950 - 7970 [espically an overclocked 7970] i would be able to **** on bf3 from a great height at ultra - 1080p.

would a change to intel make a difference? or cant it really be answered and i just need to find out? my pc is used for gaming/browsing only and ideally id like to keep my current ram and PSU and just change out the mboard and CPU.

Current rig :-

Amd phenom x6 @ 4.0ghz
ASUS sabertooth 990fx mboard
8gb corsair 1866mhz ram [can only get stable 4ghz at 1333mhz]
gigabite windforce 7970 1200/1650 @ 1.250v
700wat corsair PSU
watercooled cpu on custom loop

so to cut a long story short
  • would i notice a difference AMD - intel
  • can i use my current RAM and PSU
  • and can someone please spec me a mboard/ cpu budget £300-£400 ideally around the £300 mark unless i can some how sell my current boarad and CPU

thanks in advance,

Steve

I'd pay an extra £5 and get retail i5

also if you dont mind tipping the 300 mark could go for a i7 3770

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-405-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=567

but this would take you to around 345 mark :D

excuse me for being a nub but whats the difference between the i7 + 5? other than the 2mb l3? and the number lol

i know absoutly nothing about intel!

ok i ordered the first build suggested, [i5] will report back to this post with some results and most likley an "how the hell do i overclock an intel cpu" thread
