Hi

Looking to change to an Asus Rampage Formula motherboard and was also going to get a decent cooler. The two I was looking at are

Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler or the Thermaltake BigTyp 120 VX

Anyone got any opinions on either of these using with the Asus Rampage Formula ? I will be using it on a Q6600 cpu.

Thanks
Martin

Hey there :). I've got the Q6600 and tuniq with the rampage board. So maybe i can help you a little mate. Fitting the Tuniq on this paticular board is a bit tough, for a start the heat sinks all around the processor socket make screwing the thumbscrews that attach the tuniq a little tricky not helped by the tuniq massive size (you have to get your hand under the tower). So this is definatley a heat sink you want to fit out of the motherboard (if you don't
already build like that!).

Also due to where asus have placed one of the power connectors to the asus mobo (the one that looks like a pci-e power connector, the 8 pin one, can't remember what it's called sorry!) you want plug that in before getting it in your case as it's positioned rather awkwardly between the heatsink and the case (when fitted); the same goes for the little lcd connecter that comes with the board.

Also due to the heatsinks the tower only fits one way (its the fault of the plate that comes with the tuniq). Ie with the exhaust fan blowing hot air either up or down. So it's only advisable that you have a case with a fan mounted to the TOP if the case (see antec gaming range for what i mean) so you can blow the warm air out of the case. I also found with this paticular setup that the two fans (the heat sink AND The case fan) i was getting some serious air flow there :D (the fans are about 2 inches from each other).

Has that awnserd your questions mate? Feel free to ask more mate.

I bought myself an Asus Rampage Formula and a Q6600 last week. I am using a Zalman 9700LED and am not disappointed so far. The heatsinks surrounding the CPU housing on the mobo do add some difficulty when fitting a cooler though. In particular I had to trim 3mm or so off the top part of the bracket with a stanley knife in order to get it to fit.

Having said that, this doesn't affect the performance and the Zalman looks really neat with an open case. Further, my Zalman blows directly onto the rear exhaust fans of my Silverstone TJ07 expelling any hot air immediately. Idle temps are anywhere between 18-21 which seems very low. Haven't seen the temperature rise above 28 yet even when playing crysis. Im wondering if the Zalman really is this good or if the temperature sensor is a little on the conservative side? :-)

I should probably add I am running the Q6600 only at 3Ghz at around 1.19 volts (standard) and haven't seen the need to clock it further, although there is definitely more headroom.

Would definitely recommend the Zalman as it looks cooler than the Tuniq!

Hi Guys

Many thanks for the replies :) Dont suppose you have any pics of the install ?

Maybe I need to rethink this, it sounds like this combination is a bit of a hassle. I wonder would the Thermaltake BigTyp 120 VX be a better option or is it just the design of the Rampage (heatsinks surrounding the CPU housing) that any large cooler is going to be akward to fit .

Thanks again for your replies

Well don't let it put you off, the heatsinks make things a little fiddly but it's by no means difficult. I can't vouch for the Tuniq, I will see about getting some pictures when I get home.

Ok well you can fit the heat sink blowing out the back if you want, but you have to do a little DIY.
Bassically theres a H shaped plate that fits on top of the heat sinks bottom plate and has holes in it for the screws that go through and screw into a back plate.
It's this H plate that prevents it from being fitted blowing air to the back of the case. As it has little bumps at the outside of the middle crossbar of the H,

(the plate on the right is the one im talking about and the round semi cricles on the top and bottom there is what i mean, imagine rotating it 90 degrees to see what i mean bout the H thing :P).
If you where to remove the semi circles by sawing or something then the tower would fit blowing air out the back, as these are the things that get in the way, also you wont need them as its just for fitting the heatsink to a different socket (can't remember which) the 775 holes are at the end of the H's feet
Sorry i was pretty vague, bit hard explaining things hungover and with a dead digi cam!
