Its time for me to upgrade my pc this time with the other half's consent :D

Main goal is to be able to play Civ 5 at highest res (27" monitor) with max detail - this is for the Mr's. My goal is to make a good looking water cooled PC without breaking the bank.

Would there be any performance benefit if I was to change the M/B to something like the Asus Z77 Sabretooth and keeping the current i5 till I've got a bit more cash.

Graphics wise was considering a HD 7970 as my current card is pretty slow.

Any comments welcome.

Current system is:

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor

Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard

Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz XMS3 Memory Kit CL9 1.5V unbuffered

HD 4850 GFX

OCZ Agility 3 60GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (AGT3-25SAT3-60G)

Close to Swindon, but not Swindon
I don't see a benifit at all. The 2500k is a superb and still strong CPU, the upgrade would be very minor IMO.

I would recommend getting some faster RAM, 1866/2133 and a 7970. The MSI Twin Frozr III 7970 is a bargin at £260, cannot wait for mine to arrive.

If you can squeeze it in, get a bigger SSD. If you have access to the MM, that would be ideal.
