Hi all

I have been bitten by the " OC BUG", and I would like to know how far I can push my quad via WC ???

But a few questions to the grand oracle of WC :p

1. What items do I need to do a CPU cooling only?
2. Will a WC fit in my case ? and lastly.......
3. What should I buy specialised parts or a kit? and what recommendations?

Thank you for reading this and look forward to your guidance

PS this will be my first go at WC so will need some sort of instuction :)

On decent WC - 4.ghz

But you are already on 3.4 ghz , and tbh , the money spent on a good WC set-up ( £200 +) , you will not really see much difference in day to day usage.

For CPU Cooling only, you need

a water block for the cpu e.g. D-Tek Fuzion, Swiftech Apogee GTX
a pump to move the water e.g. Laing D5 or DDC-1
a radiator to remove the heat e.g. Thermochill PA120.2 or Black Ice Stealth or Swiftech MCR220
a fan(s) to cool the radiator e.g. Yate Loon, Panaflo
some tubing to transport the water e.g. Tygon R3603 or Masterkleer
a T-line or reservoir to fill and bleed the loop.

All of those terms are Google-friendly.

Will they fit in your case? Sure. If you want them to look good, you'll need to do some planning and thinking (!)

As to kit vs. custom, I've done both and kit is far easier but less satisfying. Custom is more expensive and not for the impatient.

BTW, how are those boots these days? Still wearing them a size too small?

a water block for the cpu e.g. D-Tek Fuzion, Swiftech Apogee GTX £40
a pump to move the water e.g. Laing D5 or DDC-1 £40/50
a radiator to remove the heat e.g. Thermochill PA120.2 or Black Ice Stealth or Swiftech MCR220 £40
a fan(s) to cool the radiator e.g. Yate Loon, Panaflo £5/8
some tubing to transport the water e.g. Tygon R3603 or Masterkleer £5
a T-line or reservoir to fill and bleed the loop.£3

Coolant/clips etc. £5.

Not much change out of £150 .

For a possible/max .6 ghz increase on a Quad.

I love watercooling , make no mistakes about that , but you do the sums to see if its worth it :D

Not disagreeing but some people have more money than sense. I first put in water-cooling to get an Xp1700+ to 2.4GHz which was a big money saving as no-one made a chip that fast. Today no-one makes a 4GHz chip but it's a much smaller % increase for rather a lot of money.

Of course, Joe just might like speed with peace and quiet.

Agree , Mike.

Modern chips clock well.

I was pointing out the "bang for buck" of watercooling.

Its not cheap , and current air coolers will give it a good run for the money.

Just trying to be balanced.

( Watercooling wins :D )

WC will let you get to 4ghz with a half decent Q6600 and 4.2ghz if you're lucky.

I bought my WC kit to experiment and see what I could get out of it. Got over 4ghz but now I'm thinking of selling it. Theres not much difference between 3.6-4ghz in daily use really, its just about benchmarking and online ego really!

Going back to a lower clock and air cooling I think, rather have a nice new headunit in the car!

What would you class as good air cooling gents?

Best air coolers on the market at the moment as far as I know. The Ultra 120 might be hard to get hold of as it has been discontinued but the IFX-14 is the new version of it. Not seen reviews on it but heard its as good as.

That is if "gents" means coolers :p

You want LCP as the thermal paste/adhesive as well - http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews....battle_of_the_goop_-_thermal_paste_comparison

I thank all the above gentlemen for their ideas and suggestions...it seems that it can cost quite a bit for the small gain, so will consider lapping for now to drop temps underload, and see if I can squeeze it to 3.6....that should keep me happy until the new quads come out.

Once again thanks
