Ok this is absolutely not to be a PS3 vs Wii vs 360 thread.

This is a technical thread and no references to the various consoles is required at all.

What I want people to do is to list what is important in a console to them.
In other words if you were to specify from any gaming company exactly what you want in a console what would it be and what do you really definitely NOT want.
From your list pick your TOP 3 console specific requirements.
Try to keep it to the console rather than the games that are available. Assume any game would be availabl for it at a decent standard.

I'll start:

I want the controller to be comfortable and responsive.
Price of console and games must be affordable.
Console must function reliably.
I want good graphics.
I want the console to be quiet.
I want a range of games.
I want to play online.
I want good online services.
I want the console to hook up to my wireless network and stream all my media without messing about.
I want innovation.
I want to be immersed in my games more I want motion sensing controllers.
I want the console to look good and be reasonably small.

I don't want wires.
I don't want to convert media to suit.

My Top 3:
Online play.
Innovation.
Good graphics (note that this means the ability to output lovely graphics, even if the games themselves don't take advantage of the ability).

As it is my thread I'm going to have a 4th top requirement:

Price. £250 is about as far as I want to go, I'll spend a little more but my target price is £250 for a console with storage, wireless controllers and wireless networking.

you just bascially said an xbox 360 :p

edit: i want the same as you

Midday and you're out of bed already? Blimey.
I don't think anything there in my list is not a possibility with Wii, 360 or PS3. None do all of them though.

I want games that my friends can and will play with me.
I want games that I can finish.
I want good prices for games and hardware.

I don't want high def nonsense.
I don't to play against 14 year old Americans.
I don't want wires.

I want:
- Downloadable demos, extras, patches etc.
- Online play with a friends system.
- Smaller, cheaper games, Live Arcade style game.

I don't want:
- Gimmicks
- Loads of 'party games'
- SD graphics.

You want a Wii then :p

I want a wide range of quality games
I want to play games online
I want a good quality, reliable online service
I want comfortable controllers which are wireless
I want it to be more than just a games machine
I want it to look nice so it fits in with the rest of my equipment

I want a controller that is comfortable and natural to use
I want a system that is easy to setup and play one
I want a reliable system
I want something small/unobtrusive
I want something that isn't going to break the bank/cost as much as a mid range+ PC
I want good, fun games that concentrate on the gameplay, not FMV, or tech demo graphics.
I want games that can be played with friends/family.

I don't want to have to download patches/updates to get games to work reliably
I don't want to have to spend ages setting it up
I don't want an all singing, all dancing media unit - i've got a PC etc for that.
I don't want a DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-ray drive if it doesn't have a drect, positive effect on the game - I'll buy a dedicated player if i'm going to watch films, and would prefer the system to be cheaper or have the money spent on a more vital componant of the unit.

My top 3 hardware wise are
I want a controller that is comfortable and natural to use
I want a system that is easy to setup and play one
I want a reliable system

But the main thing I want is:
I want good, fun games that concentrate on the gameplay, which to my mind comes down in the end to a combination of the games developers and the control system (a great game can be ruined by a poor controller setup).

Actually, the PS2 serves me pretty well too. Tekken and Pro Evo still stand up well against Wii Sports for evenings in. Shame about the wires everywhere. It can get really messy.

Can we stick to console features for this new OCUK console that we are going to have built specifically for us please and as it is an OCUK console mentioning any other console directly is to mention a competitor and that is a naughty.

I want:

- Lots of fun games (I know you said I shouldn't say this, but its so important)
- The console to fit under the TV and fit in with its surroundings
- Reasonable graphics at a reasonable price

I don't want:

- Significantly different versions of the same console - e.g. ones with/without hard drives...
- Long lists of technical specs - with consoles I shouldn't have to care about CPUs, Mhz, gfx cards etc.
- And endless stream of games that are basically the same as what I was playing on my xbox with souped up graphics.

I want a broad library of quality games
I want support for the latest AV technologies (HD, surround sound, etc)
I want Pro Evolution Soccer :p

I want want a games console to be just that, a console to play games on.

Ok so what about price, controller feel/style, Graphical capabilities and so on?
What about connectivity, online play?

A console that isnt outdated within 2 or 3 years
An easy control system
Option of a portable unit which can act as a controller or in its own right
Decent graphics
Decent sound
Better Gameplay
An all round console (not just good at FPS / Racers or platforms)
One Box - not litered with cables and add-ons here and there
Silence or near silence even when using all media types
Full network presence / complete file trransparency and useage (with Windows especially) - ie full media box
Enough storage out of the box - without trying to flog EOL drives initially only to sell larger ones a year later (but if FULL network is available this is less important)
Saving setup/ config files - consoles fail for one reason or another and everyone has different setups, why cant we export a setup easily to external drive?
Looks nice - not a black / white slab of plastic
Retail box should include scart and hdmi/componant cable
TWO premium releases on initial rollout (not just the same game with updated graphics) - at a bare minimum

Three of Primary importance:
a Long life (especially if its expensive)
One (tidy) box
Full accessability via pc's etc

I want my dream console to have the following features...

  • A fantastic catalogue of innovative and expansive games which are all available for download so I dont have to get of the sofa, but only cost about £10 each.
  • Controllers so comfortable that you dont even feel you are holding them and at a touch of a button they can morph, ala transformers style, into a keyboard for typing etc.
  • Incredibly photo realistic graphics which make your jaw drop in awe everytime you see them.
  • A fantastic looking console which looks like a high-end peice of equipment but costs less than £100 at launch.
  • A truly remarkable online service which offers automatic matching to players of equal ability but will send a small electric shock via the controller to any gamers caught cheating online.
  • A completely updated and HD release of Sam Fox's strip poker ;) which detects when your misses enters the room, via some plugin device, and switches to something voilent so she leaves again.
  • The last thing I would like, and I don't think I'm asking too much from this list, is for the console to recognise your individual gaming style and adjust the difficulty of game play according to your mood etc. i.e. if you were playing Pro Evo with mates and happily drinking lots of beer then the console would add extra support to your play as you get more pi55ed so that you don't suddenly find yourself being hammered 10-0 by Japan on one star.

Thats all really - not too much to ask.

I thought this thread was about what we each found important on a console?! For my first and foremost is the games. Without the games I won't even bother looking at the console regardless of price hence why this is all I put.

I can live with different controller types although yes online play is a big factor (although again this comes back to games).

SO as a short list:

1) I want decent games

As a longer list (damn you for making me type I wanted ot be lazy :p )

1) I want decent games
2) I want a console that is priced fairly compared to its competition
3) I want decent online features

I don't want:

1) A console that tries so hard to be something its not and by doing so foregoes focus on its games
2) party games & / or mini games as these don't interest me at all.

:)

For me my 360 fills most of my criteria so I'll put in my little ask for what I'd like in an ideal world:

I want a Dreamcast esq. VMU type unit using all the gubbins that are available today such as colour touch screen display, thin and lightweight, internal lithium rechargable battery with decent life, huge SD card for data storage.

But most of all I want it to be well integrated within games so that every game had some functionality from it when away from the console. Some examples using current games-

PES 6- fiddle with your team line-ups, formations and strategies
Saints Row- Mini games to earn cash / respect
NFS Carbon- work on car designs
Forza 2- Modify your setup and have a rolling road in your pocket type functionality

You get the idea.

I'd also like it to hold information such as player profile and achievement type information.
