Console Criteria

I want good games, the console is almost irrelevant.
Snap.

Want:
1) A broad range of games
2) Innovative titles
3) Quality multiplayer games, both online and off.
4 (sorry, just remembered one) ) 2D games!

Don't want:
1) "Next-gen" graphics, just for the sake of them. Better graphics don't really make a game that much more immersive, and add next to nothing to gameplay.
2) Movie playing drives. I have a PC, and a DVD player, and I don't see the point in upgrading to yet another new system.
3) Erm, wires? Bit of an outdated point given all the new consoles, but I was stuck for thinking of something else that I really wouldn't want in a console.

  • Incredibly photo realistic graphics which make your jaw drop in awe everytime you see them.
  • A fantastic catalogue of innovative and expansive games which are all available for download so I dont have to get of the sofa, but only cost about £10 each.
Hah, good luck with that. ;)

EDIT: also, you know lists can be done by going:

[ list]
[ *]point 1
[ *]point 2
[ *]point 3
[ /list]

Decent games (goes without saying)
Wireless
Ability to Play, record and store TV/FILMS/MUSIC without having to connect up to anything else but the TV.
Wireless controllers
Browse internet
Quiet
Good Graphics
Cheap enough to have one in every room.
Easy to use, and easy to customise.

I want the console to be the central piece of equipment in my house.

I want my dream console to have the following features...

  • A fantastic catalogue of innovative and expansive games which are all available for download so I dont have to get of the sofa, but only cost about £10 each.
  • Controllers so comfortable that you dont even feel you are holding them and at a touch of a button they can morph, ala transformers style, into a keyboard for typing etc.
  • Incredibly photo realistic graphics which make your jaw drop in awe everytime you see them.
  • A fantastic looking console which looks like a high-end peice of equipment but costs less than £100 at launch.
  • A truly remarkable online service which offers automatic matching to players of equal ability but will send a small electric shock via the controller to any gamers caught cheating online.
  • A completely updated and HD release of Sam Fox's strip poker ;) which detects when your misses enters the room, via some plugin device, and switches to something voilent so she leaves again.
  • The last thing I would like, and I don't think I'm asking too much from this list, is for the console to recognise your individual gaming style and adjust the difficulty of game play according to your mood etc. i.e. if you were playing Pro Evo with mates and happily drinking lots of beer then the console would add extra support to your play as you get more pi55ed so that you don't suddenly find yourself being hammered 10-0 by Japan on one star.

Thats all really - not too much to ask.

That'll do me nicely :D

IMO the 360 meets your criteria, especially for its online capabilities and gameplay quality. However i dont own a PS3 or a Wi so cant compare really.

I thought this thread was about what we each found important on a console?! For my first and foremost is the games. Without the games I won't even bother looking at the console regardless of price hence why this is all I put.
Yup it is about what abilities you want the console to have.
The assumption in the OP is that all games are available at the same standard.
So it then boils down to things like aesthetics and controllers, can it handle online play (early consoles did not), is the ability for it to display high quality graphics important and so on.
So it is sort of specifically not about games as they will be available anyway.

I want to feel like my money is well spent in relation to what the console offers.

For example, if I went out tomorrow and spend £20 on a second hand console -lets say a gamecube as they can be had for that much- that to me would be money well spent (range of decent titles available, things such as 'last gen' graphics etc would not bother me). If I spent £200-300 on a console, I would expect a great online service, HD graphics, titles available, comfortable wireless controller etc etc. I would also expect that I can set it up and play straight out of the box without having and going to buy cables/addons etc. I want to choose which of those I buy and when.

Same goes again when spending money on games. I would not be a happy bunny if I spent £49.99 on trash like king kong :)

This is the one and only reason I have not bought a wii. Personally, I just cannot justify spending almost £200 on what is a gamecube with a fancy controller. It does look fun, but I will wait until they are sub-£100.

I want Sony's hardware, Microsoft's XBox live and Nintendo innovation. All in one console.

Well said - you hit the nail on the head in my estimation

Nintendo's innovation (plus their back catalogue :D )

Immersing games - The ones that makes me feel like am one with the machine.

No gimmicks - Vibra pad, shake shake pad, or tilt sensors. I prefer the old school button and combos input to execute moves.

Longevity - On both console and games. I dont want a game i can finsish in 5 hours or less nor a console that will be out of date in 3 years time.

....I will add more as they come to me.

I want:
Fun games with gameplay as their most important feature, that are good both single and multiplayer.
Innovation, new ideas and new ways to play.
Low cost for both console and games, no more than £200/£25.
Straightforward plug in and play, no messing around with settings or needing patches.
Comfortable, wireless controllers.
A reliable system.
A console which is designed with only gaming in mind.

I don't care about:
Graphics.
Processing Power.
Wireless internet access.
Ability to act as a media centre - I have a pc for that.
Online play.

The most important things to me are gameplay, cost and comfort.

Thats the best one I have heard yet - although I would have to add Microsofts dev tools to the equation

Banzor this man for mentioning competitors to the OCUK console grrrrrr.

I kind of see what you are saying except I need you to clarify the hardware qualities that you feel are present in the hardware part of your post.
Preferably WITHOUT making inter console comparisons.

What I am trying to get at here is if we could make the perfect console what would the top 3 features of the console be.
Suprisingly gobsmacking visuals don't seem to be that high on anyones list, some really want the console to be the center of the home entertainment and some don't.
Cost doesn't seem to feature as highly as I had expected.
Some people seem to really like innovative control methods others want to stick to the controls they are used to.

Most strikingly is that people want lots of quality games with playability and immersion built into them. Gameplay > bells and whistles.

I've refined my console wishlist (I have all bar one in my house).

Top of my list is cost. If it is over £300 then it's more than I am interested in paying. I would probably feel differently if I did not already have so many expensive toys.

Next up is gameplay only that is not a feature of a console but a feature of the games and so it can't be on my list.

So instead of gameplay my number 2 requirement is online compatability. I much prefer playing online to playing alone, although I do enjoy single player games, I miss the banter of online.

Thirdly I think I want my console to be the center of my home entertainment. I don't want billions of things under my TV. I'd like my console to have all my divx, mp3, photos etc on it. I want to be able to browse the net fully through it. I want to be able to record TV through it.

I'm going to go for a 4th and I want innovation, I want motion sensing, video sensing gaming fun. I want to swing a lightsabre about instead of pressing buttons. I want to perform jedi hand movements to send droids flying or to choke death star officers.

Now I know it sounds as though I want a computer from the above but I don't. I have 4 decent spec machines upstairs and hardly use them since I got my laptop and rarely game on them anymore. So this is my don't want list.

I don't want to have to meddle about with patches and upgrades and compatability issues. If the console updates itself then great, I don't want to have to do anything bar turn it on.

I don't want backwards compatability. I thought I did but I have never bothered using the backwards compatability so far. If it has it then fine but it's just not a big deal for me and so far no-one has mentioned wanting it.

Backwards compatability is a bit hard to define when you're not letting us mention specific console names isn't it? ;)

I mean, one of the big selling points of the PS3 for me, originally, was that it would be able to play both PS2 and PSX games, and since I'd owned neither, I'd have an entire back catalogue available to me from the start. On the other hand, it was never an issue for me with the Wii, or an incentive for me to get a 360, as I own a Gamecube and an Xbox.

As well, a lot of the top games on the Xbox have (or will have) fairly similar sequels on the 360 anyway, so you've no real need to play the originals. Whereas the PS2 and Gamecube have more of the quirky one-off titles, that might not be seen again on their successors.

I want!!
Something which fits in with my other TV equipment in looks
Free online demos (live!)/online features
High definition graphics
Something that’s fun too play with family and friends
Wireless controls
A Quiet console
Reliability
It to be small

I don’t want!!
Standard graphics
A machine where the first consumers become beta testers for the hardware

The one thing I really want is awesome and immersive game play above anything else :D

I've never bought a console based on anything other than the games available for it.

Any console specific features are a bonus imo.
