Hi all,

My boy is 7 next week and I was thinking of getting him a console for his Birthday. He has got my old PS3 which he shares with his brother but some of the games he struggles with a bit and I was thinking about getting him a console like the ones of old (Sega Megadrive etc.) where the games were a bit simpler and you could just pick them up and get straight on with them (games like Alex Kidd, Outrun etc.)

I was looking at the Sega Megadrive classic with the 81 games built in but it seems to not be an officially licensed Sega product and apparently isn't very good.

Any ideas?

Nintendo Switch surely. My daughter is also 7 next month and she wants a Switch after having a Wii U since launch.

Games like Mario Karts, Splatoon etc are perfect for young kids. The Switch is a portable too so take it with you to grandma's or play in the dock on the big screen

Slightly different to suggestions already and it would require a bit of setting up initially, but a Raspberry Pi & RetroPi could be an option.

If you can get your hands on a snes mini at a good price, its a good shout, my nephew is 7 and I took mine when I was over there for xmas and he basically couldn't get enough of it.

you can get the mega drive collection for PS3. Get Toy Story 3, I think my daughter was 6 when we played that one

My son has my old Xbox 360. He mostly plays Lego games / Disney infinity (discontinued) and Minecraft. I would recommend a Snes mini, switch, Xbox one s (backward compatibility with 360 games). You can ask him what his mates have as well. Sometimes my son has his friends come over to play, watch movies and play on the console.

TBH Snes games are rock hard for a child as it is all about reflex. It took my ten year old a while to get to grips with our. She is fine with Xbox 360/One however.

Also my daughter absolutely loves her GameCube. She loves Mario Sunshine, Harvest moon, Pikmin, Animal crossing etc. Wii's are also comically cheap as are GameCube controllers.
