Hi folks,

Now before I begin I'm a compete PC noob in regards to gaming, hardware to get, use and software. So I have no clue at all.

I am 37 years old and been gaming all my life, all Console based I have had numerous Playsations and xboxs, currently have 2 PS3 one PS4 and a xbox 360.

I love gaming, gaming is my one true love and hobby, so I watch lots of videos on up and coming games, read reviews, follow games from their development to release.

I'm getting sick of missing out now on games I REALLY want to play that all seem to be PC only, or are cheaper and better on PC.

Still never played DayZ, H1Z1, Elite dangerous and now I have been following Star Citizen which has been clearly stated that this will be PC ONLY.

So my question is what is the best PC to get, build, that can run these games, bare in mind I haven't got a clue and budget is a huge thing, I don't want to have to pay a kings ransom, so what's the cheapest but best value for money to get me started on the PC gaming front???

Cheers

What is the budget? Can build a tower from £400 and onwards plus your peripherals and monitor costs although could use your existing TV if you like. Cheaper if you go second hand, fully built towers pop up in MM quite often.

always the question how much do you want to spend?

you can go for a low end gaming system to high spec with 34" free synch all the bells and whistles

MM? (Apologize for my ignorance lol)

Cost will depend on what you are trying to drive, one 1080p 60hz monitor, a 4K 60hz monitor, 1440p 144hz monitor, multi screen setup etc and of course how much you are willing to spend.

Again I would want something to run the likes of DayZ, H1Z1 ect, I know Star Citizen (which has really got my interest) will need higher specs I would say??

So with that in mind what would be best and most reasonable??

I have mates who said they would help me build one if I get the parts ect, but I have no Idea were to begin, most have said to try in here as you guys know your stuff lol :)

Just a note here, but don't get into PC gaming for Star Citizen. It's the Duke Nukem Forever of our times, except 3D Realms never tried to convince anyone to pony up thousands of dollars for virtual items before the game was released. Elite: Dangerous already covers the same niche and is actually available.

I hear you man, but from what I have seen so far, its the little touch's that have gotten me hooked, being able to get in and out of the ship, up to 4 man crew MP ect, and it looks stunning, my only hope of that type of game is coming in the form of No Mans Sky to be released in June for the PS4...........but this game looks sooo much better.

Kudos for wanting to try something new, but be prepared.. it's not as simple as plug and play like consoles :(

The state PC games get released in these days can be incredibly frustrating for the experienced PC enthusiast. I would hate to be a complete noob who gets stuck with a game that requires X amount of ini edits and tweaking just to maintain a stable frame rate.

Do plenty of research, what types of games will you be playing, would you be better off getting them on console to avoid the hassle?

With regards to running DayZ... I can't even run DayZ reliably with my machine and that cost me over £3k..

Building a computer is not as daunting as it seems, I've done the odd bit of part changing in the past but this year I built my first tower PC and it worked fine first time.

My advice is to post in the General Hardware section and have a budget in mind, my first PC I was only hoping to spend a few hundred pounds but ended up spending around £900 (I'm easily sold things).
The extra money was well worth it and got years of use out of the computer.

This ,I would only advise it if you have free time.

I will never stop playing console, I love my PS4 and all that, its just games like Dayz H1Z1 are games I have always wanted to play and work best on PC, H1Z1 is due to the PS4 and some stage but God knows what YEAR that will be.

I will still do most of my gaming on console, that's were most of mates play but I have a few scattered PC gaming buddies or guys who are "hybrids" and have both consoles and PC, but there are games out there that I NEED to pay that are only for PC or again work best on PC.

Think this may be more of a technical question so be better served in hardware subforum for actual spec.

To answer your question to play those games your budget for tower alone would be £400 plus with new components, when I say tower alone you will need a monitor (unless planning on using your TV) plus your keyboard and mouse which can cost as little or as much as you want for more expensive gaming variants. Good thing is that you already have consoles so can use the 360 pad for games better played with it, just need an adapter. Also if you have friends who can build you a PC then hopefully they can also get you a cheap Windows licence as retail licence can set you back £50+.

You'll also hear about Steam which is where you'll find most of the games that you want to play nowadays, it's a download distribution platform so being a PC gamer you probably won't see yourself going to shops for games very often. Buy a game through it and it's in your library to re-download as you please, similar to what consoles started offering few years ago. There are other similar services like Origin (Battlefield games) and uPlay (Ubisoft games like Far Cry and Assassin's Creed) but Steam is most popular, all are free to use with no annual subscriptions so most people have them all installed.

You don't even have to buy the keys directly from those platforms, there are key resellers like G2Play and Kinguin which are unauthorised resellers so can grab bargains there. Being unauthorised means they resell keys that aren't directly from developers so that carries risk at times but most decent companies will refund you in case of problems. There are also authorised resellers like Green Man Gaming and Humble Store (with excellent and cheap Humble Bundles for older games) who are authorised resellers so buying through them is same as through any platform but usually cheaper.

One thing to bear in mind is that since most games come in downloadable form that tie themselves to Steam/Origin/uPlay account that they have no resale value once activated on your account.

Wondering what the outcome of this was? Did you take the plunge?

I ask because I'm currently doing the opposite. I'm sick and tired of all the hassle PC gaming brings. Hackers, Drivers, crashes, configs etc. I'm even sick of the current consoles too.

I've just bought a load of old retro consoles to play :)
