Console gamer here. PC noob. I'm sad to say every generation of Playstation has sat under my TV over the years - but I'm beginning to think things need to change. Although I loved my time with the Playstation (I've had trouble-free, easy gaming since 1995) I'm starting to notice that a lot of the games I'm really interested in are better, or only available on PC.

I like sim racing, so my only real option on PS is Project Cars 2, but on PC there's iRacing, Assetto Corsa, RaceRoom etc. I also love gritty survival games like DayZ, Tarkov & Arma, which are only available on PC. I know DayZ is coming to PS4, but can you imagine what the online community would be like? Wow.

I'm also really interested in the world of community made mods, especially when looking at DayZ and Assetto Corsa for example - this is obviously a big no-no on PS - again hence why I'm thinking of the change.

So my question is, should I start small and get a PC that will enable me to buy all these games and run them at fairly high settings (at least console quality) leaving room for easy future upgrades - or go big right at the very start, would starting small be a total false economy?

Bearing in mind I only have a 1920x1080 1080p monitor, which is new and I'd like to keep (not sure if that makes any difference though.) Although I do have a 55" 4K TV - but I don't see how I'd ever get the permission to ever hook up to that!

Any advice would be greatly received.

@MrBraindown welcome to the future/past and present :D haha

whats your budget ?

guessing you've seen VR head sets working with Rcaing sims too?

also, be surprised now, can build a PC the size of a console - just about and still perform better at 4k then a console :)

If you were my wife then I’d say my budget was £200 ;) but as you’re not I’d say that I’d like to bring this in around the £1000 mark.

I do like the idea of VR on racing games, I’ve seen a few streamers use them & they look great - as long as its not too vomit-inducing through the motion sickness!

I’ve only had one VR experience previously and that was with RE7, my concern during that was not vomiting but something more calamitous happening at the other end!

As to weather to start small or go big, the best option is to aim for a sweet spot in the middle, something like a ryzen 2600 isn't going to win any prizes for performance, and isn't the cheapest, but it does everything well enough that it will likely last for ages and can be had around £150 if you go shopping around, same can be said for graphics cards, the vega 56 or gtx 1660 ti seem to be the high end of the sweet spot just at the moment, though there's a bunch of cards around there just at the moment.

Then get a good case, power supply and storeage, that you will likely be able to reuse for a good long time.

A solid motherboard, something like this https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...ocket-am4-ddr4-atx-motherboard-mb-33s-ms.html would serve you well without breaking the bank and some mid range ram to go with it, 16gb 3000 MHz tends to offer good price to performance.

This should give you solid performance for a while without wasting money, and room to upgrade down the line should you feel like you need it.

I feel ashamed and embarrassed....How/why on earth would you even think of keeping this from me hubbs...And in front of all these "people"...
Broken....

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £909.14 (includes shipping: £12.30)

will beat ryzen at 1080p and with VR

above ryzen list is solid, though wouldn't touch that PSU ... with Vega card need extra fans in the limited airflow case .
Intel easier without having to mess around, just enable XMP for ram in BIOS, and enable MCE - Multi core enhancement and CPU above will run at 4.8ghz all cores :)

Thanks for the all the responses guys, food for thought definitely and its good to see that each suggestion comes under the £1000 mark!!

I'll let you all know how I get on!

Well, I've had an unexpected change of budget - basically my bonus was going to pay for this endeavour and I actually received more than I thought! So I'm willing to now part with £1200, so should I stick with the original spec or maybe upgrade? I'd appreciate any thoughts on the matter.

rtx 2060, not to overkill for your 1080p 60hz ... well. slightly, gtx 1660ti is a better suits card at lower price but rtx 2060 would last longer or allow some setting on ultra

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,099.08 (includes shipping: £13.20)

larger SSD as well
some RGB thrown in for good measure

MATX build with 2600x and rtx 2070 as promised. and also threw in a 32 inch 1440 75hz monitor into the budget.
can get the 2600x for <£180 and the monitor for <£200 (both inc free shipping) elsewhere - a quick google will show you
so brings the total down to sub-£1200 :)

ryzen 2600x is basically a pre-overclocked 2600 - if you want to fiddle around, then can get a 2600 instead (for £140) but you'll need to get a cheap aftermarket cooler - so total saving by going for a 2600 + cooler is ~£10-15 compared to getting just a 2600x

Total: £1,231.45 (includes shipping: £19.62)

Wow, lots of good suggestions here, food for thought. I think I know what I'm going to do now, I was considering going down the upgraded GPU route, so this has convinced me - many thanks for the advice!

Can I just say welcome to the forum and THANK YOU for taking the time to explain what you want and being responsive to peoples suggestions. Too often I see the “console gamer” title and it’s some jumped up kid wanting massive specs for the £350 they’ve begged off mummy and daddy then throw their toys out when they can’t get what they want.

+1 for 2600 + 1660ti, I’d suggest bumping the HDD up to at least 1TB. After only a few months I needed more space! Plays all current games fine at high+ at 1080p. Perhaps spend a bit more on a monitor - wish I would have gone at least 1440p.

Odd you would +1 a 2600/1660ti build, seeing as one can get a 2600/2070 build and a 1tb SSD and 1440p monitor into the spec for the op's budget? As I've proven in my spec above.
Just curious
