Console MMOs, hit or miss?

Just interested to hear your take on the new console MMOs that are supposedly appearing later in the year, or into 2011. Stuff like FFXIV...and well, that's about it. Supposedly CCP, Blizzard and Turbine have console MMOs lined up, but those are mostly rumours at the moment. Other potential candidates have either been canned (see: Champions Online) and others such as AoC have just vanished under the radar. Is the MMORPG genre ever going to actually succeed on consoles?

I know MAG is probably the closest thing we have seen so far, with up to 256 players online, but that falls under the MMOFPS category and isn't so much of an open world. I'm more interested in those of a RPG nature though, and curious to see how consoles will handle MMORPGs, especially with such a limited choice of controls if there is no keyboard or keypad present. Personally, I don't really see many MMOs ever making it across from the solid PC platform onto consoles.

What do you guys and gals think?

I think one of the main things which puts people off, especially typical console players, is the monthly fee. Paying for XBL for example and then paying extra to play the game would put quite a few people off when they could just play it on their pc minus the XBL charge.

Edit: Also I can imagine patching becoming quite a pain.

Yep Final Fantasy XI is pretty much the only decent example of a console MMORPG that actually worked. FFXIV will just build upon that experience. Otherwise I haven't really heard much about anything else. Most of the other games are just RPG's with some online functionality via Co-Op Diablo-esque.

There was a (Marval or DC) Super Hero one announced that sounded good, but not seen much of it since announcement.

But I am sure at least 10 MMO's have been announced for 360/PS3 and none have been released after 3-4 years.

I totally forgotten about this, but there will be Kingdom Under Fire II, which is a Action RPG/RTS and the online side is to be MMO.

Agree with your first point.

I don't see the big deal about patching, although you aren't the first person I've seen mention it. With PSN and stuff, is it not quite easy to roll out patches/updates for games, as they download automatically upon launching the game?

If you are signed in and online to the PSN on the PS3 and if the specific game that you just happened to launch detects a newly released patch, then it will automatically download and install for you.

Pretty simple process, it's just the fact if the download becomes too big, too slow or if there are too many and you end up becoming very impatient as you just want to play on the game.

Both FFXI and phantasy star universe require a monthly fee but dont require xbox live gold to play online, I imagine another MMO would be similar.

im really looking forward to ffxiv although ive not looked into it too much ive been in the mood for a decent mmorpg for a while and as long as there is some sort of free trial that runs ok and it isnt too expensive i think i may have to give it a go.

Personally i think console mmorpgs are a great idea, will be interesting to see if any of them try to remove the monthly fee ala guild wars and just run on the live/psn service (if this is plausable)

Console MMO(RPG)s are the one thing that haven't been successfully done on consoles yet. I don't see any reason why they can't work - just a matter of time.

Whoever makes the wow for consoles will probably have the most successful game ever!

DC Universe is still coming to the PS3, I think it's due the end of this year.

You'd need a keyboard in order to type in the chat channels, but I'm guessing you can get those for consoles?

There was an interview a while back with a Star Trek online dev where this was brought up and he said that it was Microsoft and Sony' handling of their infrastructure that was stopping them getting these games onto the consoles and that lots of exceptions were made for FFXI at the time. He went onto say he could show you the client for several of their games running on consoles.
