Hi all,

I have always been a PC gamer but recently with my hardware falling behind and having installed vista I dont play any games on my PC at all anymore. Its just there for uni work and my photography now really.

So I got thinking about buying a console for games instead. I've never had one and dont really know the first thing about them.

I was talking to a mate today who said that the PS3 and the Xbox 360 are the best out there.

What do I need to know? Where should I start?

Cheers

whatever you do, Please disregard anything MR LATTE ever says to you about ps3.

What kind of games do you play and what are you after? How much is your budget and what sort of tv you have?

from the sig I would say you're an F1 fan ;) so you may want a PS3 as it's got F1 on it. But you also say you were an avid PC gamer so chances are you're into FPS - in which case 360 is the way to go... unless you dont like playing FPS on consoles like me?

It's all down to personal choice, your budget and the kind of games you want to be frank.

hope that helps :D

As a pc gamer i'll think you'll find the leap to a 360 an easier and more enjoyable one than to the PS3 or Wii. Pretty much every pc game i'm looking forward to is also coming out for the 360 - Bioshock, Alan Wake etc - and it's currently the top dog for online console gaming (which is likely to be the case for a good while)

Hi there,

Generally I play First person shooters and car racing games as you have guessed!!

TV is a 20 Inch sharp LCD, not high def or anything fancy. I will hopefully upgrade to something nicer soon.

360 might be the way to go for now.

Might be a good idea to wait and see what the line up for the PS3 is going to be, unless, of course, you want a console right now.

Unfortunately, when looking at the range of games available the 360 will look better. As someone has said above, a lot of PC style games have been annonced on 360 but they will probably also get released on PS3 aswell.

As Joebob said, personal choice really, try to scope out future releases for the PS3 and compare them to current and future 360. Pick what you prefer.

Well if it's FPS and racers then I would say go with 360. Unless you absolutely must play F1 games then you have no choice but PS3 or PC. I must say that if racers are your bag then Forza 2 is looking very nice indeed :)

Well I'm kinda in the same situation as you. I've had a range of consoles, N64, PS1 and PS2, which I got rid of a good few years ago. I'm not looking for a console to replace gaming on the PC, simply take the pressure off of upgrading stuff.

Personally and unless something drastic happens to upset the market in the next month I'm going to get myself a 360, I will however wait until the Zephyr refresh comes about. I'm not so fussed about colour or HMDI, but noise levels and stability issues. I'll wait and see if the internals are changed for the better and decide between the various deals then.

Why 360? Despite my time with the PS1/2, the games and online play of the 360 interest me more, the back catalogue looks better and the future releases look more promising. I'm still tempted to buyu a 360 now as the warrenty and MS service seem to be pretty good, but I'll be narked if I buy now and a better model comes out for less in a month or so.

I would go for a 360 right now it has the most games of all the next gen consols the best online play atm is just as powerful as the PS3 and much more then the wii and is mid priced

The Wii is a cool console but is underpowered and in the long run this wil play a big role with future games but it is cheap

The PS3 has the capacity to be huge but as yet is not proven its online is somewhat broken its games are average to poor and has no AAA titles oh and it costs loads more then any others give it 18 months and it might be a different story but for now save your money

I too moved from a gaming PC, same issue the whole PC needed upgrading and really didn't want a console after owning a PS2, (which was awful compared to my PC at the time) in the past the PC had always wiped the floor with them.

Anyway a friend kept going on and on about the 360, had the cash and took a gamble, again OK ish on a standard Tv but only when I connected to to a HD TV I realised how good the graphic's really were, in fact I was stunned.....

I rate it better than my my PC - and the games are just starting to come out, still not quite there but just a matter of time, Saints Row is brilliant.

This is from a real past console hater, :) PS3 or 360 I'd go 360 as posted above the games are more PC'ish plus it's got a 18month head start, also cheaper.

I would not say Resistance: Fall of Man is average to poor by any means, IGN gave it a score of 9.1

And not forgetting it supports upto 40 players online!

Thanks for the replies everyone.

It looks like the Xbox 360 is probably slightly better for me at this moment in time then.

Im aware its been out a year or two now though, how long is it expected to be sold for before they release a replacement / update?

Cheers

I'd say about 3 years for the console to be replaced, maybe longer? (Complete guess, I haven't heard rumours of any replacement plans)
There are the rumours of the 360 getting an update to include HDMI and a larger HD, however, there's a lot of people saying this is a joke... I personally think we will see it quite soon.
