I think I'm right in thinking when you have a list of available resolutions in the settings of a game, and there is 1 that is unusual + different to the rest (1600X1000 for example) that is the original res the game was created in

is there even any point using the highest res your pc can handle, like 1920 1200 in these game ??
(I think games with those kinda res's are console ports..)

Most console games are produced at either 720p or less, 1680x1050 is a fairly standard resolution.

The 'unusual' settings cater for different aspect ratios. For example, 1280x1024 for some LCD screens.

As for using the highest your PC can handle, it'll display more pixels' worth of data on your monitor. It'll therefore be sharper on your monitor and give more detail per square inch. All in all, can't be a bad thing :) except if it cripples performance
