Last week with the announcement from David Reeves that the PS3 has overtaken the 360 in sales in Europe (wrongly or rightly), someone asked about the current sales of consoles. Well Today Sony announced the figures for FY 07, with record profits (not as high as expected though), and we now have as accurate figures as possible for the state of the console HW business for all 3 manufactures. Sony's full figures for FY07 can be found here http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/IR/financial/fr/index.html

Nintendo sales figures
LTD (as of Mar. 31, 2008):
DS: 70.6 million, 370 million software
Wii: 24.5 million, 148 million software

Fiscal Year '08:
DS: 30.3 million, 186 million software
Wii: 18.6 million, 120 million software

Fiscal Year '09 (projected):
DS: 28 million (down 8%), 187 million software
Wii: 25 million (up 34%), 177 million software
Microsofts 360 Sales
As Microsofts FY ends in June, their results are not as complete.According to Gamasutra, Microsoft announced 1.3 million Xbox 360s were shipped in the quarter ending March 31, 2008. That brings lifetime Xbox 360 shipments to 19.0 million. Through the first nine months of Microsoft's fiscal year last year 5.9 million Xbox 360s had been shipped. This year, through nine months of the fiscal year 7.5 million Xbox 360s have been shipped. With GTAIV and the recent price reduction in Europe, Xbox 360 should easily see more units shipped this fiscal year than last year.

So as of 31st march 2008 LTD ship to store sales are
Wii 24.5 million
360 19 million
PS3 12.85 million

Im sure this will upset some people, cause fanboy arguments etc etc but I thought it was quite interesting to see the current state of HW/SW sales worldwide. Interesting to see how next years totals tie up with this years forecasts.

I wonder how many more Wiis would have been sold if the stock issues hadn't occured. I would put my money on the figures being astranomical.

go nintendo!

To make that top3 fair, it should be divided by the number of weeks (or months) the consoles have been on sale. THAT would be interesting.

EDIT:

and because i'm bored...

Wii - didnt biother calculating as its sooo going to be top.
360 - launched in us on Nov 22 '05 - 0.633 million/month (+ any extras for GTA 4
PS3 - Launched Nov 11 2006 - 0.714 million/month

Pro-rata that for their lifetime, and PS3 would be 21.4million (had it launched at same time as the 360, and sales continue at same mean rate as they have since launch (which probably isnt accurate due to slow uptake of PS3))

Christ, my Garden Leave is really making me boring :/

It should also be shipped to consumer, not shipped to retail, and include the more important attachment rates.. but stats are good for causing arguments ;)

It can only be shipped to retail, it would be a huge job for them to check every sale. The Uk numbers check sales by EPOS data but not every store will use it, so it would be a huge under taking. Groups such as NPD use this data for some stores, but places such as some huge internet sites large chain stores are all estimates. As for causing arguments like i said it probably will but anything causes arguments on here lol. Attach rates are mostly used for spin, eg the 360 has a higher attach rate than the others but its got an extra 12 months or so of games and possible console ownership ergo it would be higher.

personally I don't care about sales figures, so what i'm more than happy with my console - thats all that counts. For instance, if I wanted a hand-held I'd buy a PSP because that's what appeals to me, not the best-selling one.

Wonder if the Wii and PS3 would have sold even more if there was anything worth playing on them.

Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Zelda, Resi 4, Paper Mario, you're not too bright are you, Metroid, Advance Wars, Mario Galaxy, no more heroes, wario ware, wii sports...

There's lots worth playing.

I know it would be a huge job, but it would be a better stat :) As for the attachment rates, or even games sold, they mean far more to the games industry than the number of consoles sat in stores.

But regardless of what stats anyone produces someone else can always produce stats to "disprove" their point and start an argument in the process. As they say the only proper statistic is that 100% of statistics are open to interpretation ;)

Resident Evil was released on the gamecube and PS2, and even the PC so if you played them its probably not worth playing it again.

As for the other people, even die hard nintendo fans I know play them for a while then seem to go back to playing online on the 360.

I don't own a Wii personally, doesn't appeal to me no games appeal to me (not saying the games aren't good, there are a few I really want to play, but not enough worth me buying the console for).

[sarcasm] Because there are sooooo many good titles for the 360... [/sarcasm]

Well there technically are more titles out for the 360 - and I would argue because the console is out longer there probably are more "good" titles.

I own both a PS3 and a 360 though, I have only recently purchased a PS3 so currently going through a nice back catalog of games :D

I don't see how it could upset anyone?

It is interesting to see what is considered by most of my friends a niche hobby (gaming that is) is actually enjoyed by 100s of millions of people world wide and you haven't even touched on sales of Gfx cards for PCs. ;)

I did online gaming as a presentation topic for my dutch language course and some of the snorts of derision were very offputting, nice to see I'm not the only geek into playing games.

So was ninja gaiden sigma but the ps3 fangirls still rave about it.

<off topic> I seem to remember reading an article that was slashdotted saying that the videogame industry is now bigger than Hollywood, so not sure it's a niche market any more </off topic>

Like the use of off topic quotes but sadly I can introduce you to many who would argue against the facts.

Like when I say I play games they usually say consoles are for kids then I point to GTA IV with it's 18 cert, or blu ray powers or media streaming powers of the xbox, they will never listen.

Oh I know, it's purely subjective - I was just trying to point that out to him using sarcasm.

Which didn't work. :p
