Why are no companies listening to the idea of this, people would save hundreds on computer buying and probably switch to consoles for the most part if this was possible no upgrades and frequent updates via a Live system, i realise Xbox will never do this and allow people to use keyboard and mouse ingames, but why are there no other companies taking up the initative to do so?

The 360 does support them via USB. However, it's down to the games companies adding in support for them into their games - but the general consensus is that they stick to the controllers only for it to be a level playing field.

Yes i understand all that, but why not have a console that is purely keyboard/mouse.

Generally speaking, for people who aren't tech savvy, I'd imagine that navigating menus and such with an analogue or digital controller is much easier than using a mouse.

Presumably the same goes for controlling a game.

This could be why the Wii is becoming such a great console for Mom & Pops. They've never picked up a controller in their lives, let alone a keyboard and mouse. Something you can point at the screen is so simple to use :)

The Dreamcast did offer both keyboard and mouse support (mainly for internet browsing) and a couple of games supported it... PSO is the only one that comes to mind. I think a few FPS games allowed you to use a keyboard and mouse too, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
