OK, I've currently got an old AMD Barton system used sporadically as a game server, mostly older games like UT2004 and NWN1.
I use a ReadyNAS to store my media (flac and Blu rips), 1.5Tb in a RAID1.
I use the ReadyNAS as a music server too (Squuezeserver), although it's performance is only 'OK'.
I use a Popcorn Hour A110 to view the Blu rips on my telly.
That seems to be a lot of boxes, and wondered if there is a reason I shouldn't consoldiate them?
What hardware would be good for this. I want it to be always on so low power is a concern, but I also think an Atom would struggle with the load (music server, game server). I'd be after a low watt (Pico?) or high efficiency PSU too.
So is there a low power dual core I3/I5 or C2D that is suitable? If I'm getting such a relatively powerful CPU should I just use it to encode my rips to H264 (currently done on my C2Q desktop)? In this scenario I'd need hardware that has a low power resting state but can ramp up the speed when required, and I don't mind if it takes a day or so (queue em up, low priority).
Then I'm thinking, why not use it as a media device too? Or am I going daft?
