will make you giggle, but this thought has been swirling around
I was thinking the other day, looking at the new batch of AAA titles, are extremely taxing on gpu's yet offer nothing new, next one is Alan wake, my 3070 will only get me 1080p at dlss performance @ 60 fps:eek: , some graphics barely improved, on some even look worse. yet this comes in a middle of a drop in gpu sales for a while now.

so with the Conspiracy hat on, like wtf is going on here, are they ramping up specs forcing us to upgrade, seems unless you pay 1,5k 4k native is out the question these days, even last gen mid range are struggling at 1440p.

Or is just lazy game optimisation, which is probs the sensible option

I was thinking the other day...
Well there's your problem, i gave up on doing that years ago. Maybe your conspiracy hat isn't working properly as when you put it on it's meant to prevent the user from thinking rationally. :D

Seriously though, i think what you're observing is the effect of diminishing returns.

Rushed optimisation or lack of is likely the reason. Quality of gameplay has not been consistent for how long now? An aim to improve graphics but at the seemingly cost of gameplay/features/options, while decreasing overheads and increasing profit, probably.

i should do as well, at my age i should know better

i know the conspiracy was a bit much, but i cant figure out why the games are so taxing, as above 30plus yrs of pc gaming, never have we had anything like this before, where last gen mid range is pretty much rubbish, christ even the rx6600 which sold by bucket loads will struggle in AW2, that's the minimum requirement ffs

there must be some improvement even if you cant see it, Alan Wake 2 is 90GB

even the remastered Alan Wake 1 was not even half that

it is annoying though, i remember games that made my GPU look old, metro exodus enhanced, assassins creed origins

i remember not being able to play Skyrim properly and a bunch of other games in the past

it is much worse on gaming laptops, you start hitting games you struggle to run earlier

I'm pretty sure this is an example of the rebound effect. If you've ever seen how games are made, there's a clear explanation for why this would happen: There isn't a fixed amount of dev time allocated to improving performance, but instead a target level of performance (typically 30fps for consoles and 60fps for PC), and no more dev time is spent on that than needed.

Therefore, new tech that improves performance will not result in any actual change in performance. I expect quite a few people have heard of this idea in the old saying "what Intel gives, Microsoft takes away", except now it's nVidia and games instead.

Game pushing visual and tech boundaries gets labelled ‘unoptimized’. If you want to go that route, at least pick some game that looks bad and unjustifiably asks for high end hardware, not alan wake 2.

Games like starfield, gollum and other turdcakes.

All Remedy games have pushed hardware to the max at their time while visually doing things no other games did. Even low in AW2 will look better than most games on ultra do nowadays. Just fragile egos getting hurt by the ‘low’ preset.

i think AW2 graphically wise looks pretty tasty if im being honesty. but i wont be forced into upgrading this gen, theres no point unless you go and throw a grand plus at it, seems the days of low/mid range AAA gaming are coming to an end for the time being, seems like we being forced onto consoles, though i wouldnt sell out for a console, if i have to game at 1080p upscaled then so be it

buy a 4070 this gen, prepare for 1080 gaming next gen

Honestly, the console versions will be running at low and most likely upscaled from 540p/720p with FSR.

Same story as with aveum / remnant / lords of the fallen. People thought they ran at 4k/30 on consoles and going ‘lol PC’ while the reality was 720p upscaled.

I wouldn’t recommend consoles, unless you want to mostly play first party games. They are the only games that have a decent balance between IQ and perf. Anything multiplat, think you’ll get even more annoyed by the lack of IQuality and performance. While the initial promises were high, they failed to meet expectations.
