Constant AMD crashes and Power downs

Rocking a 2500K mildly overclocked for last 4 years (4ghz), having a mare since I changed graphic card to a 390, the AMD driver is constantly crashing and recovering and then the machine randomly switches off (Happens couple of times a weeK), the other changed factor is Windows 10

My guess is either the GFX card is faulty or the PSU is on the way out (3 year old XFX 850W), anyone got some clues on how to hunt this down

oh dear, not after a fanboy exchange, i have no brand loyalty as such, the card may simply be faulty, god knows

Install the latest 15.10 Beta drivers from http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows+10+-+64

They fixed several 390 series problems, worth a go :)

did a clean install after upgrading from 8.1

pc just shutdown instantly again, wonder if its overheated somehow, might re apply paste and heatsink or is that a total shot in the dark?

Could be worth resetting OC on CPU, checking all cables are fitted correctly, however it does sound a lot like the PSU might be struggling. 850 Watts more than enough tho and three years is not that old, is the PSU still in warranty? It could be that the 12v rail does not have enough grunt (again highly unlikely).

You could try a clean install of W10, however l don't think this will help in this situation.

Out of curiosity as it's looking like you psu is struggling as said. What else do you have hardware wise in your machine. As you say that since adding the gpu is when problems happen and the 390 is power hungry it may have tipped you over the edge. Although I'm not sure here as 850w should be plenty for most systems.

Try running a gpu benchmark to see if it crashes as this would put you in a scenario where the gpu would draw the most power.

Also has the machine randomly restarted during idle times? Maybe download hwmonitor and check your temps on gpu and cpu and also check your voltages. Keen to see any sudden spikes in either.

cheers for the suggestions, the pc runs a ssd and a HD apart form the kit m,entioned so should cope with ease, no idea on warranty

will download a couple of benchmarks and see what happens, the power offs can happen mid game or even mid browsing, seems random to me

The PSU will be powerful enough (When I ran a 2600K @ 4.7 and 2x 290x overclocked the PSU was drawing about 650w at the wall during gta5)

Probably worth setting CPU back to stock to be sure. What motherboard do you have?

Its all pointing to the GPU I'm afraid to say. What manufacturer 390 did you get? Maybe there was a small batch of faulty cards. A simple RMA should get this resolved for you though.

Could perhaps still be power related though as others said 850 is plenty assuming it;'s still working ok (and 3 years is hardly ancient!) - has the PSU got multiple PCI-E power connectors? Try different ones perhaps? And/or if using two plugs on a single cord try using two cords?

Does sound more GPU-related to me now but worth a shot maybe.

Yh defo worth a shot.

Also you can download a free program called speccy and it will list your hardware makes models etc. Saves you ripping it out to look!
