Constant Disk Noise When Idle

I was just hoping somebody could help me sort this little issue.

Basically whenever I leave my computer idle for any time, something, I assume Vista, decides it wants to have a lot of disk access, and as my disks are rather noisy ones, this can get rather annoying.

So I'm looking for a way to stop this happening. I've disabled indexing on both disks in the computer, but the noise still remains.

Thanks guys.

How long has Vista been installed for? I wouldnt worry about it, Vista has a few features that constantly check your drive and keep things in order, not to mention SuperFetch.

Buy a better HDD.

More likely to be Vista's indexing service which if left unchecked can actually kill your drive. Best bet if you don't use the search "feature" regularly is to simply disable the indexing service.

Vista has been on there for at least 6 months now, most probably longer. I would buy a quiter driver, but I don't have the cash right now, so that's not an option.

Also I would rather sort the issue, than just throw money at it.

Yeah that's exactly what it does, its a new MS feature

Back to the OP, have you installed anything recently, could be checking for updates. Or even a virus or malware.

Yes, I really like Vista except for this one thing - it thrashes the drive for no apparent good reason. Drives me crazy. I don't believe there is much you can do.

I haven't installed anything major recently, an update to iTunes but that's about it as far as I remember.

LordSoploge - Is there are way to disable the defragmenting, I use Defreggler to defrag when I feel it needs it, so I'd rather disable this. Is there a service or anything that I can disable?
