Hi All,

I have just purchased a pair of 6970's. They have come from a good seller on ebaY with good feedback etc. My PSU is an Enermax 720w. Whenever I remove a 5870 and replace it with a 6970 the card beeps continously. I am using 6 pin to 8 pin adapteres for the one 8pin connection and the stock 6 pin for the other. Both cards do the same thing. My PSU is at fault in my opinion, simply struggling to cope. Do I need a new PSU wired ready for Crossfire/Sli with the correct 8pins in place as standard??

Am going to test the cards at someone elses place who has a modern PC to test the cards. I need to act fast as I need to keep the seller up to speed.

Thanks a lot for help.

Funnily enough im in a simuliar situation - "NEED MORE POWER CAPIN'"

Yeah I kinds figured that would be the case. One of those upgrades that seems cheapish to start with then kicks you in the butt.

Thanks chaps

When you start your PC up though even with two 6970's it should use up nowhere near even 600w, unless the PSU is faulty I dont think its that.

The only time you would use up all that power is with your in windows and heavily overclocked and under stress, simply turning it on would just use up 500w at a max, probably more like 300w or less.

I am not using molex convertors. I have a lead from the PSU (6pin) to an 8pins PCIe plug. There is a jumper from pins 5 to 7 and 6 to 8 making 4 12v pins and 4 ground pins.

Well I am buying a new PSU. I would imagine a Corsair TX850V2 is adequate for two 6970's at 950MHz. Anyone??

One 6970 should have a 500w minimum according to the specs, is your old PSU a 80+ bronze certified? You need to check the amp and watt rating of the card and compare it to the max amperage per 12v rail on your PSU.

I can't do this as I'd need both of them in front of me. The PSU you're going for should be perfect for 6970 Xfire, but if you ever want to swap a 6970 for a 6990 I'd go for a 1050W minimum. But in your case for 2 cards this PSU is perfect.

Hmm that doesn't sound right. A PCI-e 8 pin has 3 yellow +12v and 5 black grounds.

The EPS12v CPU connector has 4 +12v and 4 grounds.

Are you using the correct cable?

It certainly isn't right!

By time you add in all the other power requirements, you should be looking at a 800w 850w psu minimum.

Ah confirmed I think. This is a 6 pin PCI-e to EPS12v, which is not for graphics cards. The 12v and grounds are swapped over. Bit dodgy really using a PCI-e to CPU power cable but I suppose it's useful if you just don't have the right cables available.

This'll be the one you actually need.

It's a good thing you didn't blow the card up.
