Constant network problems (have to restart adapter)

I have an asus p5k delux and I use the onboard network connections, I have sky broadband with the netgear router they supply and its all connected via cables.

Now regardless of which port I use (there's a realtek and a marvell port) I often (several times a day sometimes and then days or maybe a week or 2 without then several times a day for a while again) have dropouts where the internet connection stops working, the little icon in the bottom right has a red cross over it or a yellow triangle saying I have either limited or no connectivity.

Over time the connection comes back or I can diagnose the fault using vista which gives me the option to restart the adapter which normally fixes it, sometimes it doesn't and I have to reboot.

All the while if I'm using my laptop with wifi it works fine so I guess its not the actual connection.

Anyone any idea what might be wrong? I've had this with another router and iirc even different mobos, I just seem to have real trouble with this.

Any help appreciated! :)

Tried using a static IP for the network?

Might be DHCP on the router?

Just a wild stab in the dark though.

how would I do that? I'm good with watercooling and rubbish with networking! is that likely to be the issue??

Tried a different network cable?

no, its all hidden under skirting boards and it's quite a long cable, guess I could buy another, would a cable make me reset the adapter and then work again?
