I subscribed to an yearly plan with an online IT video service. half way through I decided to cancel but they said they do not offer pro-rated refunds, although on the site it doesnt mention anywhere about this fact.

(its an american service btw) - Can i just go to my credit card company and dispute this or should I not just bother?

Did you pay for a year up-front, labelled as an annual subscription?
yes i did.

What did your contract say when you signed up?
not sure... :( there was no contract terms as such.. i dont think

just having re-read the terms:

8. Governing Law
Any claim relating to Laracasts's web site shall be governed by the laws of the State of Tennessee without regard to its conflict of law provisions.

9. Refunds
If you are not 100% satisfied with your purchase, within the first seven days, contact [email protected] to request a full refund of your most recent subscription bill.

$15 * 6 is $90, so even if you 'win' this one by getting them to agree to convert your annual subscription to a monthly one and then charge you six months of subs, you only come out $9 ahead.

I'm not really sure why you'd think you could get a pro-rated refund - clearly the monthly option exists for people who are unsure about the service. Maybe try and sell the rest of your subscription term and just change the email address on the account to whoever buys it off you.

If you try and do a chargeback on your credit card I would expect it to be declined, and probably for the provider to cancel your account.

yeah I think if they actually gave you the option to pay monthly but you decided to save money and go for the yearly option then part of that money saving is you taking on the risk/acknowledging that you're paying for a whole year up front and you have given up the option to cancel part way through a year (which you could have paid for with the monthly option).

To then turn around retrospectively and decide you want the optionality of the monthly payments (that you chose not to pay extra for) isn't right IMO, if you were to get away with a credit card refund somehow then I think you'd be behaving rather unethically towards this business.

As explained by @dowie the whole point of the two subscriptions is to choose either flexibility or reduced cost. You opted for reduced cost but to commit to a years payments. So you won't be able to get a refund.

to put in a blunt term
you signed up for a year you want out TOUGH pay up

or
try and argue that they did not provide the service as described and TRY to dispute this with you credit card doubt this would work due to the kinda contract you entered

I have been busy hence not seen it since now..

Normally the services explicitly tell you no refunds - this is an important thing or so I thought.. like you say its not worth the hassle i bet but i think he doesnt update vidoes every so often so it feels like you are just paying him for nothing.. after all if you pay for a video subsc you do expect to see new videos come out at least a week or so he claims/claimed..
