Contact Lenses - which opticians can prescribe Toric Extended Wear ones?

I've just run out of extra sets of contact lenses. SO I thought rather than reordering what I had last time, I'll get a prescription for some extended wear ones (You dont have to take them out at night, for a month or so).

Now I have an astigmatism which means that my eyes are ever so slightly not spherical, and thus the lens shape has to be corrected to fit over the eye snugly. Such lenses are "toric"

I booked an appointment to go to an opticians in London and was told plainly and simply that Toric Extended Wears dont exist. They do and I've seen them here as well as on other websites :

Does anyone know an optician that will prescribe for these? I'd rather do the minimum I need to do to get a prescription and order online. I've had normal torics off GetLenses before and they're great :)

Is it worth trying an independant?

I hear new laws mean you have to keep going back for checkups every 3 months or so, is that true or just a marketing ploy?
 
I also have astigmatism and used to use the All Day All Night lenses from Specsavers.

Unfortunately I became allergic to them and apparently (according to my optician) this has happened to quite a lot of people so if you wake up one morning to find your eyes sticky and sore get straight round to the optician and get it checked out.
 
Aren't they just a standard nontoric lens?

The optician said I could give them a go as my astigmatism is only slight...

Not sure but my astigmatism worsened over the year or so I used the lenses and they were still the most comfortable ones I've ever used - until the allergy set in dammit!

Specsavers tend to give you trials so you could see if the suit. Plus they run a package deal that includes free checkups so works out pretty cheap.
 
wow, that site showed me the difference in cost between focus dailies, that I wear and acuvue lenses... I always presumed everything was all about the same price etc.. OT I know, but does anyone know if there's any difference between the two (comfort etc)????

Probably not. But that site beats the hell out of any price the opticians will give you. www.contactlenses.co.uk is even better in some ways.

You cant just order what you want though - you need to be prescribed for a specific lens and the sites need to ring your optician to check thats what you're prescribed for (dont worry they have to give this information) - so if you can, ask for a trial of whatever product looks good, then buy online :)
 
I've been using Bausch & Lomb , Purevision lenses for about 4 years from Specsavers & not had a problem.... yet.

I have been told that unless I come in for 6 monthly checkups they will refuse to supply me with the lenses , don't know if it's a legal thing or they are just ****** me about :D
 
i buy 3 months supply of monthly lenses from specsavers, they get delivered, because im doing direct debit, also means i get free checkups so going back every 6 months is fine tbh

Yeah but isnt that a bit of a "free lunch" - seeing as you're paying a premium?

I'm currently in the eye drops and glasses phase of discovering I've become allergic to the build up - hopefully in a months time I should be able to go back to daily disposebles, maybe even the 7day continuous wear ones as the allergy only seemed to flare up in the last 10-14 days of the 30day period

I'm also with Specsavers and since joining my monthly DD has gone £25, £18.50, £15.50 and I still get everything I did at the beginning. I also got my frames and lenses half price when I had to switch back to glasses.

Turns out a local independant will prescribe without hassle :) Then I'll just go online with the data. Cheaper for the test too.

I'm back on the dailies now. Damn shame as I loved waking up able to see!

Chronos-X - The Specsavers package was definitely no free lunch as I'd have had to pay a fortune in appointments with the optician when I've had problems had I been buying them online. I was on the package Vicious was on so got all that free. Bear in mind that you'll have to pay to see someone if you do develop problems.
 
yeh what im on is good, u get them delivered, its cheapish i think, you get solution as well, new cases etc etc. free checkups. also been only 17 i get free checkups anyway, but still a good deal, ive also got 2 vouchers 2 get a replacement lense if 1 breaks or i lose it which is kinda good, but may just be cos im under 19

Nope! I got all that too. Plus my package price kept dropping so I think I was only paying about £14.99 (maybe even less I think) per month for the all day all night ones in the end. I used to get offers for cheap glasses too.
 
Update!


Turns out www.tescoopticians.com - yes thats right, tesco, blow getlenses right out of the water for extended wear! £45 for 3 months, as opposed to £120 on the high street.

For that price I wouldn't mind if my eyeballs rotted out of their sockets due to them :D

Shows how much of a markup the big boys on the street are making.
 
im not paying as much as £120 for my purevision extended wear from boots
they tried to move everyone who wore monthlys onto them so i'm still getting charged the same as i did when i started wearing monthlys, a bit over £20 a month i think, and that's including solution, tests, and aftercare

i think the 6 month check up is standard for extended wear, due to the increased risk of infection, you might be wearing them twice as long as normal monthlys
 
i just get daily wear one from specsavers which is £8 a month and gets me free checkups and cheap glasses, mind you I only get 15 pairs a month as I only use them for sports and wear glasses during the day at work
