Can someone explain how these work? In order for this to work, which of these is true?

- your phone can be in sleep mode with the screen off
- your phone can be locked but with the screen on
- your phone must be unlocked with the screen on

I almost never use them. But a quick check with my iPhone shows that if locked then it needs face ID to open the wallet. So, basically, it must be unlocked.

I don't know about 'other phones', but this is my experience of using a Natwest card via Google pay on a retail Huawei P30 Pro.

By 'screen on', I'm not including any daft scenarios like, my phone screen is broken, or I'm using DEX, or I'm mirroring my phone etc.

I pay on mine with the screen awake but locked.
You can choose what setting you want to be able to pay, locked/ unlocked etc.

Samsung phone btw.

Was going to say I thought there was a limit for paying while locked. Things like parking etc, I tend to just wake the phone and pay but anything more I will unlock more out of habit if nothing else....

For my Pixel 6 it must be unlocked and therefore the screen would be on.

I believe that's a setting. I'm sure mine by default set up allowed you to pay with the screen on but the phone locked. Which didn't feel particularly secure to me, so I now have to unlock the screen.

The limit depends on the store, some are £100.

Google Wallet help site states UK limit for locked devices is £45 but depends on bank/card.

I shall check my settings to see what it is. Ideally it'll be no transactions while locked/screen off. While I don't make a habit of crowd surfing at NFC festivals I don't fancy the idea of being "scanned" by strangers.

Ah it is. Under Connected Devices -> NFC, I enabled the setting that requires the phone to be unlocked. I completely forgot that was there, literally set and forget.

I've been opening my Google wallet app every time... Do I not need to?

You don't need to, so the Wallet shortcut on the lock screen is kinda useless most of the time. I'd rather it was a shortcut to my loyalty cards instead, that's the main reason why I open the Wallet app.
