contacts deleted from phone

Don't know how this happened went to phone someone only to see "no contacts".

I didn't sync the phone and it wasn't near itunes don't know how it can just wipe the contacts.

Currently restoring from 14/1/14 lucky I decided to back up recently as the phone is usually never near the PC.

4S BTW.

What's strange that my recent and favourites remained

Do you use iCloud for contacts?

Also did you reboot the phone to see if it was just a sync error?

Sadly I didn't do either I really should start icloud back ups again.

Strangely I've seen on facebook a few others that this also happened to over the weekend. Virus?
