Contacts on Android

Silly question maybe, but. Is it normal practice that the contacts list consists of both email addresses and telephone numbers. I ask as until recently only had telephone numbers. However I needed to receive a QR code and was advised to read it using gmail which was the first time I'd used it on my phone. It appears that everything is now synched on my phone in contacts and both telephone and email addresses appear. Is this normal?
