Contains a virus and has been deleted...

I fixed someones laptop recently who had a malware infection.

Its all gone now and all tools show that there is no more virus or malware.

However, when downloading a file in internet explorer, it still says that the file contains a virus and will be deleted.
Downloading the same file in Chrome or Firefox works fine.

Microsoft Security Essentials was installed before and seems to have been corrupted by the infection. I assume this is whats bloocking in IE. I have done a manual uninstall of MSE but the issue remains

What else can I try?

what version of windows is it?, and version of IE. A re-install of windows would obviously cure it but you might not need to.

I've done a bit of searching regarding this one and found that a lot of people who have suffered this problem have found it was related to AVG remnant files.

Try removing anything connected to AVG, reboot and give it another go.

I actually agree with evga gamer on doing a fresh install.

You might spend ages faffing around trying to fix this stupid issue (which may be indicative of further issues). It takes hardly any time to reinstall windows from a usb stick (once you've made the stick) and install programs with ninite.

Formatting once a month is very excessive though. I do a fresh install once a year or so before my uni modules start.

The joy is in finding the fault and fixing it especially when you might, as I do, get something like this 4-5 times a week. Agreed for one user and one machine if you do not have the time, backup format. If you have time let the fun commence ! :D

You must use and abuse your system if you have to format once a month. The average Win7 system on an SSD will go for years without needing a format to restore performance.

even back in the win2000 days I used to have the same OS install for years lol.
I learned how to maintain an OS and keep everything running smooth, others seem to learn nothing and just format there comps a lot.

just went from x6 > haswell and using the same win7 install flawlessly to ;)

but in the OP's case I guess the computer was to badly infected to really save, last chance would be to run combofix which is amazingly good on my sons laptop when ever he has had tons of viruses/malware

I agree. Make sure you remove the AVG secure search thing aswell.
