Content Aware Fill - Demystification

As we all know the Adobe videos were hand-picked codswallop...

So how would people feel about posting images they believe are good candidates for some content aware fill lovin' (Maybe something you've been struggling with and think this is the tool you need)? Users who have the new Photoshop CS5 trial can now try out the method for themselves, and post back the results.

Please restrict this to the content aware tool alone as per the Adobe videos. We all know what Photoshop can do with time, this is supposed to be about instant usable results. Let's see what we get :)

Would you care to elaborate why they are codswallop?

Personal experimentation. Feel free to watch the videos and the results posted here and draw your own conclusion. Many here knew it wouldn't be as good as the videos, but we accepted that was marketing. This topic is to see what people can do it with it in a more normal setting :)

Well then why don't you post up some of your personal experiments? :/

Because I'm not on my computer with CS5 on it. If I must download it and post up something to get this topic off the ground I shall, was just hoping perhaps people would just play along than start an inquisition?

Fstop has said in the other CS5 thread it's know where near as easy as they make out and you need a good understanding of how an image and the tool works for it to work properly but he did post an example and it seemed very promising.

Given this content aware fill a go. This is all done with three brush sweeps. Two on the lower rocks, one on the grassy bank.

Okay now what we all want - a 100% crop. Please excuse the compression artifacts and the softness - it was a discard - also excuse the wrong tagging info in the EXIF - didn't change it from the last shots

I said this in another thread

Good? , sorry but it looks like you tried to clone her out and failed... I've tried this content aware fill and it messes up many photo's . Tried it on a bit of rope across grass and across someone's trouser leg and it went crap. Not only did it corrupt the guy's trouser leg but it made lots of clones of the grass which was very noticable.

Gimmick , i'd be annoyed if i bought this

I think you've got the wrong idea on what content aware fill does. It can't just create the backgrounds and see behind your subject. It's designed to blend into repetive/random patterns. Like grass/sky.

Having tried it on a few panoramas I can assure you that using the fill tool you can very, very convincingly create large portions of the frame not incised in your stitch. It can see horizons and patterns in sky really well.

The video's made it seem far more than it really is

Which a lot of people stated and agreed that obviously, them being professionals, and good at marketing, they made it seem like that to sell. And lets face it, it worked.

That doesn't mean the content aware fill CAN'T do what they showed, it very much can do it, you just need to work at it.

When you know how to work it properly, it'll certainly be very beneficial to a lot of people, it'll just take a while to learn it.

Its a very good tool and since playing with the pre release beta and the final the Content aware fill has been improved since my last post but again it still requires a good approch and you simply can't expect print worthy finishes every time.

To get the most out of it you need to understand where the data is being pulled from around your selection. Consider this and it'll become a great and powerful tool.

I haven't used this tool yet, but some comments here make a lot of sense to me. it's possible to get great results with just a cloning/healing, but it's also possible to get terrible results this way. It takes time, care and attention. I see content aware fill as being a whole lot easier than cloning (in some circumstances), but it will still require much the same time, care and attention.

Looking forward to seeing some more examples! :)

I was like :O when i saw the video.
Had a mess around with the content aware tool yesterday - did it quickly so not the best but i was amazed.
Was using various pictures from my 1920*1080 wallpapers so a lot included water which was nice. Removing boats etc :)
