Hi there.
Seeing as the PS3 currently (is it coming?) has no way to stream content from a PC, I thought I'd try adding a PS3shared folder to my webserver, and access content via the PS3 web browser.
I downloaded Video9, and converted an XVID file to .mp4 and tried with that first.
Tested it with IE on the PC, no probs.
Went to the PS3 browser, but sadly, I only got a "please insert storage media" message. It won't let me save to the PS3 internal HDD.
I tried renaming the file to .mpg.
It allowed me to download the file from my PC, but then complained the file was corrupted when I tried to play it.
I copied a few MP3s into the folder. They downloaded to the PS3 no problem.
I transferred a .mp4 trailer, downloaded from Playstation Store, to my USB key, and copied it back to the ps3shared folder.
It wouldn't let me download that either.
Shame!
I can download pictures, mp3s, and mpeg files from my PC to the PS3, but not .mp4 files.
Has anybody else managed to overcome this?
So much for trying to overcome the restriction of not being able to stream, and getting a media free, media centre working
I hope they allow the downloading of .mp4 files, with the browser, in a future firmware update.
Having to download from the PC to the PS3 HDD to play is far from ideal, but better than having to mess around with DVDs/USB keys.
Oh yeah, and once the .mp4 file was renamed to .mpg, and downloaded to the PS3, there is no option to rename it back to .mp4, before any smartarse suggests it
