anybody else done continental shifts im doing 3 12 hour days followed by 2 12 hour nights followed by 5 days off ,think its going to be great in summer but how did other people cope with this sort of shift

Done it for 4 years, it will kill you social life.

I just keep myself busy when doing it, luckily I didn’t have to do a lot of work.

5 days off? So 60 hours in two weeks...that's called part time isn't it?

I'd cope well with that I'd imagine!

The night thing...make sure you bring the internet to your shift.

I do 3 days 3 nights 3 off. Pretty good you have time to get stuff done when everyone is working. You just have to not plan anything when on your nights.

Depends what you are doing really!

I do 2 days, 2 nights, 4 off. Average of 42 hours per week. Personally, I love them! I work the equivalent of 3.5 days per week, and would rather get the hours in, and have more free time to myself. This week I will probably doing at least an extra shift, and still get 3 days off.

Have they offered you a decent amount of money? I get an extra 40% on all hours shift allowance.

its pretty busy but we get half hour break every 2 hours with big plasma tvs in the rest room ect

Thread was not as expected.

I have done 12 hour shifts for 8 years now and wouldn't change it for anything.

My pattern is 4 on, 5 off, 5 on, 4 off, 5 on, 4 off. That is one block of days. Then we do the same on nights. Some people are fine with shift work others are not. I can happily do 15 days in a row but others here are going bonkers after 4.

I like it because I've always got 4 or 5 days off which means I don't get what most people get which is Saturday to recover from the week and then Sunday being annoyed that they are back at work in the morning. I have enough time to completely forget about work and relax properly. Also 4 or 5 days at work in a row gets your body into the pattern properly rather than changing every 2 days like some shift patterns. Plus only doing days or nights for that 28 day period means i only have to completely swap my body clock around once a month.

Also shopping and doing ANYTHING during the week when everyone else is at work is fantastic.

I don't think it kills your social life, it just means you cant go out EVERY Friday/Saturday week.

A lot of it depends on the pattern. The couple of friends I have working as nurses just get **** upon by their pattern. How the NHS thinks that is a good way of working for them I don't know.

I can't stand that pattern personally. Our other control do it. Much prefer our pattern

4 Nights
3 Off
3 Days
1 Off
3 Nights
3 Off
4 Days
7.5 Off :)

Why. Why would you like that? having to change your clock all the way round so often. Crazy people! lol

Also, isn't the first and second "3 off" only actually 2.5? I only mention it since you put 7.5 off at the end :p

You do spend the first part of the 3 off sleeping (I am actually on that part of the Rota now) and I slept 7am till 2:45pm lol

It's more the fact you get 7 days off every 4 weeks and you're only ever working 14 our of every 30 or so days.. and 3/5 Weekends off.

True, but you get barely any time off in between that. Instead of just getting one block of 7.5 off, I get 2 of 5 and one of 4. Much nicer imo :p

You'll love the shift pattern as long you don't have any personal interests that are only possible on specific days.

Ie, if you attend weekly classes, or you drink on Saturdays etc it might not be so good.

As long as your interests can be practiced on any day of the week, it's excellent.
