I have set up a home-built PC as a server on my home network (VMware ESXi 5.1 with a load of VMs in it).

Main components are:
  • RAID CONTROLLER: Adaptec RAID 5405, 4-Channel SAS/SATA, low profile
  • MOBO: Asus M4A78-E, AMD 790GX, AM2+/AM3, CF X, Express Gate
  • CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition, 3.0GHz, AM2+, QuadCore
  • PSU: Corsair CMPSU-550VX, 550W, ATX2.2/EPS
  • 2xMushkin ES2-8500 2x2GB, DDR2-1066, [email protected]
I have four 1 TB drives attached to the RAID controller and it's in RAID 5. There is no GPU (or monitor) attached.

When the server is under heavy load (when doing gigabytes of compressed backups) it emits a continuous beeping sound, like an alarm. I have gone into the BIOS but I do not see anywhere in there to turn off an alarm. Any ideas on what I can do? I checked the RAID array and it's fine and optimal too, no problems there either. When the CPU is idle, the temp is 47C. I wondered if there was an alarm somewhere but I can't find it.

Sounds like a temperature alarm, I've had motherboards in the past that allow you to set an alarm to beep when the CPU reaches a defined temperature.

UPS overload?

My motherboard did this one day and would not turn back on the next

And don't disable the alarm. It's beeping for a reason

47C sounds quite hot for an idle temperature. What heatsink are you using? Reseating it may help if it's not quite fitted right.

I took the memory out, vaccuumed the PC, removed the CPU fan and cleaned it, put it back. We'll see how it goes...
