If you have to choose between 2 very similar monitors, only difference seems one has 20,000:1 contrast and 5ms response time and the other has 8000:1 contrast but 2ms response time....what would be preferable?

I'm not too versed in the technicalities of monitor quality, to me the most important thing as a photographer is that the colours I see on screen arent too far off what I will get on my printer, but they dont have to be spot on either, so I have avoided calibration devices for now. I also play games such as LOTRO but nothing too cutting edge like Crysis at the moment.

yeah both those contrast ratios are dynamic and in practice i doubt you'd ever see any difference. many people dont even use DCR in real use as it can be annoying. i would not base any decision on that. in contrast (no pun intended), the difference in response time there between 5ms and 2ms G2G indicates that the 2ms model used response time compensation technology to boost responsiveness. In practice, this does make a difference across the board, and that will be a more responsive model than the other.have a look here about specs
