Controller for Rocket League (and maybe Forza Horizon 5)

My son's birthday is coming up and he has asked for a controller for Rocket League. He also plays some FH5 and would like to try it in that as well.

Any suggestions? I'm a dedicated K&M player so really haven't a clue!

Wired/Wireless?
Xbox vs PS?

Key thing is compatibility with RL.

FH5 doesn't support the PS5 controller, no surprises there, being a Microsoft game.

So that leaves the XBox controller.
 
I use a steam controller. What's great for me is the dual stage triggers allow me to use boost on the click, which has ruined me really. I can't play any other way.
Steam controller also has great support as long as you're using steam, which is easy to do even if launching from epic, and gives you extra buttons for the back paddles.
