Hi all, im very new to PC gaming and i was just wondering what the best kind of controller is to go for when playing FPS + RPG games.

I have come from an xbox 360, and i have seen the Official USB xbox pc controller, so this would be the obvious choice, but at 30(ish) quid, its a bit of a joke, so i was wondering if there are alternatives that are similar but for less cash than that which are worth it.

Mouse and keyboard? For fps games it's going to suck playing with a controller on PC as there's no aim assist to help you. For most other things a controller will be fine but I don't know any to recommend.

For FPSes and similar, I greatly prefer Mouse and Keyboard (M&KB).
With a console controller, you (usually) have to move a stick a certain distance from centre and keep it held there for the duration it takes you to turn/move your aiming reticle.
With a mouse, you just move it the required distance and you're there.

With a controller, you have a number of buttons, mostly activated by a single thumb... and you have to take said thumb off the aim to use the buttons.
With M&KB I can aim & fire, reload, strafe, jump, run and use several other fuctions almost all at the same time, because I have fingers & thumbs covering far more keys.
In a space-sim, for example, I can execute up to nine separate commands at the same time. Ten if I had the Warcraft mouse.

Give me a console controller and I become an instant muppet in the game!

ah... i didnt even think of that to be honest, i have always found it very alien using a mouse and keyboard, i guess ill just have to get used to it and invest in a decent mouse and keyboard then by the sounds of it. iv played at a high level with controllers on halo/GOW etc. but i guess everyone is in the same boat there.
i'll look into some entry level mouses and see how i get on :)

The CoolerMaster Storm Inferno was my idea of an entry-level gaming mouse.
Can be found for as little as £28, has loads of buttons and customisable gubbins, still stands up as a nice mouse to use.

Definitely not FPS but some PC games are better with a controller, I'd recommend the XBox 360 wireless adapter assuming you still have your XBox and controller.

Edit: Should've probably checked that link above before posting.

Off the top of my head, I've found a few to be better. Skyrim, Deus Ex, Dishonored though that could be just because I'm more used to controllers.

Also X-com. It should be easier with mouse and keyboard but I've always found that it's the mouse/keyboard where you seem to misclick out of nowhere and leave a guy out in the middle of nowhere whereas the controller is more responsive and less random.

Out of genuine curiosity - Which ones?

I have been connecting my pc to the 48" TV in the lounge recently and playing a lot of games that suit the 360pad better. I have been playing the assassins Creed series and dark souls which are much better with the pad. There are loads of games that are better with a gamepad than a keyboard, any driving game, platform games (trine, spelunky, mask of the ninja etc etc)
The only games that favour mouse and keyboard are fps (and first person rpg like fallout) and strategy games (civ, total war etc).

The 1 absolute massive advantage controller has over mouse & keyboard, in 3rd person action games especially, is analogue control. being able to vary the speed of your characters movements is very important.

For FPS, mouse look and aim is more important. Something with the combination of analogue control and mouse look would be a terrific peripheral. Sure I read on facebook about a kickstarter project which combined the 2.

Must just be me, but almost all of those I find easier with M&KB, really.
Some flight sims are better with joystick, mainly the helicopter ones, but aside from that I just don't get on with a controller - 3PS action games especially.

Weird, eh!

I have my PC connected to my Monitor and my TV in my bedroom, depending on what game i'm up for playing. I'll either use my mouse and keyboard or I'll use my controller for games like Skyrim and all of the Batman games.

I'd say 100% grab a wireless adaptor for the 360 pad, especially since it seems to work off the bat with 99% of games!

I use my wired 360 controller and get better figures on bf4 pc than on xbox one in 64 player games so I'd say either buy the wireless adapter or the wired 360 pad. I too cannot stick keyboard and mouse control it just doesn't feel right I can sprint, move, aim, shoot, reload, throw a grenade or flash bang on my 360 pad without moving fingers. I only move my thumb when crouching/prone or stabbing.

Racing games I have a g27 but I'm just as quick with a pad. I challenge anyone to break lap records on keyboard and mouse it's just undriveable and no control.

You say you come from an Xbox 360, if you've still got the wireless controllers, you can buy a cheap wireless receiver off eBay for around £3 and you can use the wireless controller on your PC.

For me, any adventure game (Assassins Creed, Witcher), platform games (Trine) or racing game are much better on a controller compared to M&KB.

However, I mainly play RTS and FPS, and there the M&KB is king. Is nice to have a few spare controller around however when you have mates over for some PS2 emulation.

ah thats awesome thanks guys, i didnt even think to look at that, i remember trying to use the controller straight into my old laptop and had no joy, i didnt know the wireless receivers existed!

I think the only games i would prefer to use mouse and keyboard for, are things like commad and conquer, age of empires etc etc, the console ports of those games are horrendous to play.

if im starting with games like skyrim and crisis etc then i think id prefer the controller option.
