Controlling nvidia fan speed in Vista

Hi all,

I've never used an nvidia card before so forgive my ignorance. A few months back I put a 7300GT in a Shuttle for my parents as an HTPC and they've been complaining that it's too noisy. I've just had a go with it and it is way too loud - the fan constantly seems to spin at 100% and it is a tiny little thing so makes a very noticeable whine. I've checked in ntune and downloaded rivatuner. In ntune the settings for fans are greyed out, and in rivatuner I can't find any fan settings - there is no fan tab in the low-level adapter settings. Forceware 158.24; newest ntune and rivatuner. Any suggestions as to how to slow this fan down? Otherwise I think I'm going to have to scrap it and get a passive card ...

It may just be the card doesn't have PWM control for the fan. If it doesn't, don't chuck it. Its relatively easy to wire in a variable resistor (1K potentiometer = £1) in the fan positive wire. You can then set the speed where you like.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'll have to do this; I've got a resistor in there at the moment that is reducing it quite nicely. Now to remove the NB fan and quieten the PSU a bit ...
