Controlling program access

I've run Zonealarm for years but I'm becomming increasingly less satisfied with the performance it offers.

Now I'm looking for a similar programme that will prompt me when a new application tries to access the internet along the lines of ZA.

Having searched these very forums Private Firewall and Online Armor have bother been mentioned. Are there any other programmes worthy of consideration?

Edit: I'm running W7.

Comodo, despite lacking full ipv6 support (coming in the next release) is still the best free firewall around. Unfortunately that means it's equally easy to break stuff with "tinkering"
