Controlling the internet......in my home

Hello all.

We are FINALLY Getting the internet in our house since our move to ireland! :D

*Breaks out the Champagne*


Only my mum is playing funny buggers. Once around 3 years ago a pop up of graphic nature came up and she has been mistrustful ever since. (not of me but of the net).

So we have been allowed to get the internet in on one condition. That everything is monitored.

Here is what I was thinking..

(I have already brought 3xLinksys WMP54G Wireless-G PCI Adapter, and a Linksys WAG200G-UK 4-Port Wireless ADSL2+ Modem/Router


Internet comes in...... Goes through pc which distributes the internet around the house. It will be used to monitor what is going in out and out.


Is this possible? I play CS-S etc and some other internet intensive games. I would not want any setup to mess up the speed which is already slow. (3mb).

The internet will be shared between 3 people and my dad and me have agreed that I can have the faster portion due to me needing it. Can I share the speed out in a ratio or can you not.



and finally......... :rolleyes:

How much CS-S and games etc use of your limit. I have a download limit of 30gb a month and unlimited upload. How much will be used. I play games a lot.

Gaming uses hardly anything, say 10K/sec MAX.

As for your mum, just tell her tha porn is on the internet and it always will be. It basically runs it. If she can't get used to that there's something wrong with her :p

What exactly doesn't she "Trust"?

She trusts me on the pc.

However there is a family pc as well..


(I am one of 7 children). I do not want my younger brothers and sisters exposed to any , and I want to make sure that they are not talking to creeps on chatrooms. We had a family issue with that a couple of years ago)
 
iv had some people ask me how to find porn on the internet, i was in tears rolling around on the floor.

you got to be one real big fool not to be able to find porn on the net. :p :p
 
Your best bet then is to have all hte PC's password protected and setup the family PC as a restricted use PC with filters. That way you can control the content on the family PC, I can't see any other way of doing this without some rather more expensive network gear.

You can get several programs these days that filter web content on a PC. I havn't used any myself so will leave the suggestion of this to others.
 
im still on 1mb dsl :)

if you're getting a dsl router, it kinda bypasses the pc and shares out the connection. some routers have a page to set blocks on certain pages.

I dont want to go over the 30gb monthly policy.

They charge me 1c a mb if i do.

They also have this fair usage policy.

No more limewire :eek: :(
 
Dont worry, i used to be addicted to CSS and i have a 30GB limit. Never once went over it and still haven't. The fair usage policy is very rarely enforced unless you constantly upload and download dodgy stuff. Limewire is still very usable with the policy as well as torrent programs and the like.

Very few places in Ireland charge for breaking your cap if any, even though they are entitled to. I have a 40gig cap which I regularly go over for the last 2 years and have never been charged. Some placed (Esat, Digiweb) will throttle you connection if you go over by a substantial amount. Eircom do nothing. Generally ISP's in Eire are pretty tolerant. They all provide DL meters on their website as well.
