Very frustrating this but for some reason since I moved house my nas is getting stuck during the file conversion phase. It would seem to halt upon every other jpeg and/or folder I have and I've tens of thousands of photos. This kills the processing power of the box and slows it down to a crawl. I can pause the file conversion but this doesn't fix it. Has anyone come across this type of problem? It does seem reasonably common but I don't know how to fix it on this scale.

That's a good question and I don't fully understand it. I think it might be trying to convert the files into some kind of Linux file format for compression purposes but I can't be sure.

Edit: Okay, it seems to be something to do with thumbnail creation.

Just read up on it, it's part of the 'Photo Station' server.

On mine I've not used any special media shares, I just created the shared folders manually..

http://www.ocmodshop.com/how-to-fix-100-cpu-usage-on-synology-diskstation-nas/

Says here how to disable the photo station server.

Check all your packages are up to date and the OS. May be more info or a fix for the actual Photo Server on the Synology forums.

On mine I manually set up the following..

\\nas\music (read only)
\\nas\movies (read only)
\\nas\photos (read only)

Then on another user account on my pc, it has write access to these folders.

Thanks mate. It's a bit confusing. I have my photos on the photos share so I don't want to hide this area before i can copy the files over do I? I'm also not that familiar with Putty.

What I would do..

Create another folder \temppics\

Chuck them all in there, uninstall Photo Station, create a new share \pictures\ or something, then drag them all into there.

First thing I did was remove all the default shares on mine.

Yep I agree. I've actually just removed the photo station package and I can see that conversion process that was in the corner of the screen has disappeared. However, to move the photos will take over a day apparently as I have many hundreds of GB's worth. The nas is also taking an eternity to do anything, particularly logging in. I don't know the best way to move the pics. I'm also wireless which doesn't help but when I connect via ethernet it won't let me see the nas. I think I've a number of different issues here, all since moving.

Nas is wireless or pc is wireless?

Get the ethernet up and running on it, set it to DHCP and then tell your router to give it a reserved address so it always has the same IP.

PC is wireless. But I've just wired it into the Sky router. Sky router can see that I have connected but I cannot see the NAS.

Edit: Hmmm, it seems to be working.

Yeah I took a look. It was the cloud station causing the secondary problem. So I disabled it. Annoying all these software problems. I won't be going Synology again.
