Convert HDMI output to DisplayPort input

Not sure if this should go in here, or in General Hardware, but here goes anyway :)

I'm wanting to output from a Sky+ HD box to a monitor (not a TV) that doesn't have an HDMI input, but does have DisplayPort. Audio will be dealt with via the phono connectors on the back of the box.

I was thinking an HDMI to DisplayPort adapter should do what I need without any problem, but reading some of the descriptions, they say things like "is a passive adapter cable that requires a DP++ port (DisplayPort++)", and it's expected that I'll be converting from a DisplayPort output to an HDMI input.

I'm doing it the other way round, so the cable won't be plugged into a DP++ port. Is that likely to cause a problem? Is there a specific type of cable/adapter I should be looking for?

Well you lot are rubbish! ;)

I've done some more reading around, it seems like I need an active adapter like the StarTech HDMI2DP. I didn't really want to spend that much money, so I'll use an HDMI to DVI adapter instead :)

The simple (and cheap) passive adapters would have been fine going from a DP graphics card to an HDMI monitor.

You can get hdmi to display port cable's just for some reason ocuk does not do them.

Yes, but they're designed to go from DisplayPort outputs (such as graphics cards) to HDMI inputs (such as TVs).

They won't work going from HDMI outputs to DP inputs. For that you need the expensive active adapters.

Tried an HDMI to DVI cable today between the Sky box and the monitor, and the monitor complains that it's getting a signal that's out of range :( I've tried the Sky box on both 1080i and 720p, and they both give the same result.

An HDMI connection into my Dell screen works just fine - so I'm left guessing if the problem is the cable or the monitor.

I think the easiest solution is just going to be to buy a 22"(ish) TV instead.
