Ok,

Cirtain 'shortfalls' in windows have prompted me to give MS the finger and move to something that works.
I've done some research and I'm on the verge of going mac! I've searched this forum for other peoples experiences and everyone who has to have gone from Windows to Mac seem to have had fantastic experiences and had no second thoughts.

My plan is to replace my desktop with a Mac Mini and my laptop with a Macbook. I like my desktops (hence mac mini) plus its intel based to using Bootcamp I'll still be able to run windows for any apps which require windows. I've done some checking and there aren't that many.

Can someone please give me the last little push!

I'm on the same boat mate, and i am getting my first mac (mini) either today or early next week if all goes according to plan.

Wish me luck.

You don't appear to need a push as you know it makes sense :) Just go shopping :D

Oh and 8core Mac Pro's are rumoured to be arriving soon ;)

Don't forget the education discounts if you're a student, as uni students get 15% off laptops.

Any roumers on mac mini's ?

I got a used one for now to get used to OSX, but will look into a new Intel one next year when Leopard is out, any idea of they will bring C2D into mac minis ?

Is there a site for mac people to look up latest news etc ?

tbh, go for linxu over mac as
a) it will cost you less
b) you can still dual boot windows and use games etc
c) its a real MANS os.

Theres more to Mac than OSX.
Plus, if he gets a mac, he'll have a nice, quiet, stylish system, that can triple boot Windows, Linux & OSX. ;)

 what planet is he living on?

go for the mac, ive brought a imac and it is smooth as. seriously stylish, sleek and sexier than a windows based system in both looks, usage and anything else

now the intel chips have been put in, there really isnt any reason for people to keep with windows anymore.

Since I bought my Macbook my PC had been gathering dust in the corner - these days I game on the xbox 360 and everything else gets done on the macbook.

I'm switching tomorrow, going for a 15" Macbook pro, for under a grand, can't complain.

I'll be using my existing 19" TFT as a second desktop hopefully.

My plan was to go 360 also.

How are FPS's compared to PC? I may even keep the PC to use as a console lol :p

If you want console fun - go Wii :)
Keep your pc as you "other" gaming system (with a slight GPU upgrade) for those PC only RPGs (think dark messiah)

I've been using a macbook a over 7weeks now. No regrets, brilliant pricing (under HE).

Does everything I want it to, use to dual boot Windows for games till I got myself (Postal 2 OSX - it plays like on dream on my 1GB Macbook under OSX universal binary too!). Even removed Windows from bootcamp.

Now I use parallel for windows program like Guitar pro 5 - because there's RSE on windows but not OSX. I'm glad I've switch.

I've written up a post on switching from a Windows/ Linux combo to a Windows/ Mac combo, which just hasn't quite worked.
IMHO, everything depends on just how much you want to customise stuff- OSX is a lovely OS, sure, but it has this superior attitude, and just won't let you tweak those little niggles to suit your preferences.
The hardware is nice too, but I a play with a new Thinkpad- IMHO, these are miles ahead of the Apple stuff, with a much better mouse (Trackpoint :p ) and a keyboard to die for.

One of the things I like about OS X is the fact that you can't change the "theme". Some of the things you can do with StyleXP and WindowBlinds make Windows XP look absolutely atrocious. (IMHO of course! ;) )

Surely thats a bad thing though? Lack of choice? Choice is good.

I dont see what the fuss is about with these macs, unless your planning to run windows on it

Mac OS might look nice but imo too much is hidden in the name of simplicity and you cant match the amount of good free software thats available on the pc, you cant get as many games either

switching to mac os because it might be niche or cool is about as dumb as taking up smoking because your mates do it, if on the other hand you have used a mac and you find theres some functionality that you cant somehow get from your pc then sure go ahead
