Convert OST to PST

I have a 4.5GB OST file that I need to convert to PST in order to extract some emails from it.

I've tried adding the OST as the default data file in Outlook 2010 but I only see about 50 emails when there should be almost 2000. Any ideas how to do this without spending £60 for the hundreds of converters that are out there?

OST is an Exchange format I think - your best bet is to export directly to a PST file from the original account instead of trying to convert the file in isolation. Microsoft never released the details of the file format so anything converting OST to PST is a reverse-engineered hack anyways as far as I am aware.

A quick google turned up this, but I've no idea of its legitimacy (or safety!):

Yes it's an exchange format, there is no original email account it got wiped from a computer. So I've created the users Outlook profile again and its downloaded the emails from our exchange server thus creating a new OST file. However there are some emails missing which are in this 4.5GB OST file.

I need to extract these emails from the OST somehow. I used a demo verison of ost2pst which shows the missing emails but I need to pay £60 to be able to save this OST as a PST :(

If it's exchange based then it should just represent a cache, so the emails in question should still be on the server... I feel like I'm missing a key piece of this puzzle!

But those missing emails aren't there?? When I created their Outlook Mail profile it setup the Mailbox and downloaded all his emails, except for the missing ones. Im trying to think what else I could tell you that might help.......

Other than googling ost to pst are you sure the mail box it really deleted exchange is often set to retain deleted mailbox's for a number of days

Also if it's not too late disconnect from the network any machines that the user may have logged into and synced their email to and log in with their cached details

Assuming it's in an OST file then this is a cache of the data from when the mailbox was running in cached exchange mode.

If I was you I would copy the .OST file then try opening up the previous profile in offline mode if you can. The old profile should still be there, just go into start > control panel > mail then set the option to "prompt for profile to be used" (hint: you can also see what profiles are here).

Now when loading Outlook it will ask which one to use, see if you can select the old one. When loading it should let you run in offline mode which will let you view the content and export to PST or whatever.

OST file is the local offline cache from when it was connected to an Exchange server. Try running the original profile in offline mode then copying what's required to a new PST file.

/EDIT : beaten to it!

For accessing the damaged, corrupted, inaccessible OST files, the Offline file is firstly converted to a new working PST file such that the data can be used. Lepide Exchange Manager efficiently and effectively converts damaged, corrupted, unusable, inaccessible OST files to PST files after recovering the data from OST files.

You sound like a bot especially with your first post being this. Mods investigate, we may have a Cylon in our midst!
