I have an old AMD Semperon 2600+ PC sitting around gathering dust and wanted to convert it into a headless Linux server for my media needs. I would also like to make it completely fanless.

Now I could build a PC which is fanless from scratch but I'm unsure what the best option is for a Semperon based PC (in fact I have no idea what socket it uses). Also I believe the graphics card is an old 7 series Nvidia Geforce, are there any special considerations that need to be made when making a fanless system?

Also are SATA2 drives backwards compatible with SATA1 cards? I can only find SATA1 PCI based controller cards.

Any help is appreciated.
