At the moment im using VideoDownloader addon using Firefox, and downloading some youtube videos. :)

However, i was wondering how i could convert these to mp3 so that i can put them on my iPod? My iPod is a Video but i dont want to watch them as videos as it wastes the battery life quite considerably. :(

What kind of free converters are around?

Many thanks. :)

you might be able to import the videos into windows movie maker and then just export the sound as mp3 or failing that as a wav and then just convert the wav to an mp3, that's just a guess as I use different software to do it but it's not free.

You can't convert a video file to an audio file as far as I know, that would be like trying to convert a Word Document to an Access file.

I think the only thing you can do is record the sound from the AVI files using a program like Audacity and then convert those to mp3s.

Have a search for a program called Super. It's freeware and can convert between loads of different audio and video types. Sorry i dont have a link at the moment, im using the school computer

EDIT: aww you beat me Ganesh

The video and audio streams are essentially two entirely separate parts, encapsulated within the .avi wrapper, so as suggested above there should be software around that will extract the relevant stream without having to go to the hassle of recording the sound directly.

I frequently use virtualdub to strip the audio from video files to save on space, I presume that there must be some way to only save the audio and ditch the vid...

I also use VirtualDub for stripping the audio from avi's. VirtualDub Mod can also do AC3 streams. It depends what format the audio is in the original avi.

At the top where you have file, edit etc, theres one called compression, you set all the compression settings in there.

or Video MP3 Extractor. It will read .flv's from YouTube, you just need to get it to see them with *.flv or *.*. :)
