Hi,

This project is way off down the line, but just whilst the question is fresh in my mind and not soon enough to mail building regs/planning mob.

Does anyone know if planning permission is required to convert a double garage with 2 single doors to a single double door?

If it matters the garage is attached to the house.

Thanks in advance

I'm hoping so, we'd be replacing the door with a roller door of the same colour so hopefully should be simple enough.

Cheers

I could never understand why they put two tiny doors on a double garage when you could only get a Austin 7 through them. Absolute waste of time - As you said above fork out for a roller door - Tight and almost draught proof. Next doors roller is also alarmed -Try to lift it up and alarm goes off.

Yup. I'd expect an i beam span would be needed, but it constitutes a physical alteration to the property so I can't help but think permission would be needed.

My thinking exactly. Didn't realise they were alarmed though, that's a bonus.

Not sure you'd need permission as such (assuming you aren't in a conservation area). More a case of complying with building regs I would have thought. Best to ask the people who'll slap you if you get it wrong.

Agreed, I think I'll mail them on Monday.

Cheers

Email the council planning department they will give you the real answer. I wouldn’t worry even if it does need planning you are talking two drawings you could knock up in an afternoon and unless you are in a conservation zone I don’t see how it could be rejected. Building regs and a structural engineer will be much more important assuming the pillar between the doors is a structural one.
