Can anyone recommend a free converter?

Im trying out TVersity on my ps3, seems to work well but i just need a work around for .mkv files :/

I have looked in to Movkit Batch Video Converter but you need to pay to use it, is this worth paying for?

does mkv2vob keep 5.1? or is there still no way to keep 5.1 after converting?

I use MKV2VOB, and nothing else.
Keeps 5.1, keeps everything.

It doesn't encode anything, just demuxes and remuxes so the PS3 can play it.

The video and audio remain the same.

I get the odd 720p mkv TV series off the net, run it through MKV2VOB, which takes less than a minute, and then the PS3 can play it.

Quick, simple, and yep, complete with untouched video and 5.1 sound!

Enjoy!

Thanks for the MKV2VOB recommendation, used it last night. Was quite surprised with how quick it was, and the file played perfectly on the PS3. :)

I tried using MKV2VOB but the PS3 said the file type was Unknown and refused to play it.

gotsent is faster for files over 4gb but mk2vob is faster with smaller files. Thats from my experience anyway.

I guess this is only so if the file needs encoding?

The speed of the demux/remux, I would imagine, is dependant on the speed of your HDD?

There's no encoding, the CPU isn't doing much, it's just rewriting the file to the HDD in a way the PS3 can understand it.

As I've said before, I've downloaded a number of 720p mkv complete series, including at the moment, Heroes series 3, and even with mkv2vob set to automatic, it doesn't transcode anything, just takes less than a minute for the progress bar to complete, and then the PS3 plays it, no problem :)

Vin.

Those screen shots clearly show you have Heroes Season 3 which isn't out here.

I'm trying to transcode a 4.7gb 1080p mkv file and its taking forever. Around an hour just to get to the half way mark. I am using the same settings as you and my pc is powerful enough to do this. I dunno.

Out of interest, have you tried forcing the transcoding to "off" and seeing if the PS3 can play the resulting .mp4 file anyway?

After uninstalling TVersity and removing all my codecs, i reinstalled the codecs first followed by tversity i seem to have solved my issue.

Now everything works great, except... If i play a large 4gb file on the ps3 and stop it from the ps3 the TVersity program on the PC stops and i get a windows popup telling me about the problem and i have to restart the service.

This only happens when i play large files, does anyone have an idea on how to sort this?

Or convert the MKV to AVCHD TSMuxer change level to 4.1 (or if lower leave it). Create Blu-Ray disk and start muxing.

use imgburn and Write files/folders to disc and select the blu ray folder and burn.

Note you can put all this on DVD. Works on PS3, Panasonic Blu-ray's.

The only thing I would recommend only doing 1 mkv per disc cos everytime i've tried it refuses to run but 1 is ok.
