Wasn't quite sure where to put this but I reckon more people will have experience of handbrake in here.

I have a 720p MKV file than I need to convert and watch on the Xbox 360, Had a quick go but it always comes out horrible. Any advice on what I need to do?

I used to use Gotsent or XenonMKV back when I used to watch films on the 360.

You just bung the file into the program and it does the rest.

If it's in the h.264 codec already then is a total handbreak conversion really necessary?

Mkv is just a container after all.

No need to re-encode, just transcode the videos using XenonMKV.

I used to re-encode with Handbrake and Freemake but both would take up to 45 minutes per hour of 720p videos which was just too long. Transcoding takes 5 minutes at most.

Listen to these guys, so much needless conversion going on in this thread.

Mkv is a container it isn't a video or audio encoding method. Chances are you have x264 video which will playback fine. It's often (same with Apple device playback) just the container or audio (eg AC3) that the device won't play.

You DON'T need to spend hours reconverting video that is already in a perfect format. You just need to change the container and possibly the audio which is way faster. Try using Xenon MKV like suggested it will fix your files in a couple of minutes.
