Converting Videos to play on iPhone/iPad

I have plenty of films stored as MKV File type, Now I believe I need MP4 to run these on a iPhone/iPad device.

Can MKV be used on iPhones first of all.

How would I go about this, I believe this would require some software If so could anyone recommend me it?

Will this also make the films a smaller file size.

Search for AVPlayer in iTunes, good software to play MKVs.

For converting which will take time from MKVs I would suggest Handbrake or iSquint, these will reduce the size playable on iPhone, but will take time to convert.

Don't convert, it's too much hassle really.

Use AVPlayer as the person above said, it will play MKVs fine with no conversion.
